Acid reflux is technically known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. It's caused by food, stomach acid, and other digestive juices backing up into the esophagus (the tube that connects our mouths to our stomachs). The acid causes the esophagus to become irritated and inflamed, and we may feel a burning sensation in the chest, sometimes radiating all the way to the neck and shoulders.
