These two chemicals in plastic and plastic container lead to obesity and diabetes

Live healthy and long

Repost from Health Cracker | August 20, 2013

The original post mentioned a brand of plastic container (but it could apply to other brand of plastic containers).  But the most important part of the post is about the two chemicals present in such plastic containers and plastic wrappers:   exposure to this type of phthlate:   DEHP  (di-2-ethylhexyphthlate) led to insulin resistance in chidren aged 12 to 19 (meaning exposure to DEHP led to diabetes in children)  This was according to study of Dr. Leonardo Trasande  associate professor of pediatrics and environmental medicine of NYU school of medicine.

In another study by Dra.  Donna Eng of University of Michigan, the high level of BPA in children aged 6 to 18 found that children with high level of BPA had high body fat level as well.

Recommendation:

l.  Avoid plastic containers for school children "baon" especially those with recycling number 3, 6, 7 (according to Dr. Trasande)

2.  Use paper bags instead (or banana leaves)

3.  Do not microwave food in plastic containers even microwaveable ones.

Avoiding BPA & phthalates is harder than it seems

If you want to know how tough it is to lower your levels of BPA and phthalates, just take a look at what happened when 10 families were actually given some help avoiding these hormone-like chemicals.

Half were given a handout on the best ways to reduce exposure -- including not putting plastic food containers in the microwave and avoiding canned goods.

Five days later, they had no changes in their BPA and phthalate levels -- a big disappointment since these chemicals have been linked to obesity, diabetes, developmental problems, sexual dysfunction, and more.

The rest of the families hit the research equivalent of the jackpot: They were given handcrafted organic meals carefully prepared from scratch by a caterer who didn't cook, store, or serve the food in plastic.

Sounds good, right?

I'm sure it tasted good, too -- but five days later, these families actually saw their levels of one common phthalate skyrocket by 25 times. And in children, daily levels of exposure were 9 times higher than the safe limit recommended by the EPA.

Adding insult to injury, their BPA levels actually rose slightly, too.

Since their levels returned to normal when they went back to their regular everyday diets, the exposure must've come from the fresh organic foods -- so researchers tested the ingredients used in those meals.

And -- surprise! -- they found high levels of phthalates in organic dairy products, including milk, butter, cream, and cheese, as well as in spices such as cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and ground coriander.

In the case of dairy, it seems the phthalate contamination came from the plastic tubes and such used when cows are milked. The fats in dairy do a pretty good job of absorbing phthalates, so all it takes is that brief exposure for moo juice to turn into a chemical cocktail.

The spices were harder to trace, but the best guess is that they were also contaminated during the manufacturing process.

Since most of the exposure came from those sources, I have a two-step solution (in addition to the usual advice about avoiding packaged foods and plastics):

First, avoid dairy. We weren't designed to drink the milk of another creature anyway, and it shows in the high number of dairy sensitivities and allergies we see.

Try organic nut milks instead of regular milk.

Second, make sure your spices are as fresh as the rest of your food -- because a little pinch of contamination can wreck your whole meal, and you'll never even know it.

For another reason to avoid BPA, keep reading.

Discover the One Pill that could FREE YOU FROM THEM ALL

Discover the ONLY pill you'll ever need today...

BPA linked to brain damage

As if the news on BPA isn't bad enough already, new research finds this hormone-like chemical can damage brains in the most critical stage of development.

In a study on nerve cells taken from mice, rats, and humans, researchers found that BPA blocked a critical chemical called KCC2.

This chemical has one job: It lowers levels of chloride.

That may not mean much to anyone who isn't a scientist, but it's a critical job because nerve cells are always generating chloride -- especially during development in infancy and early childhood.

And if that chloride builds up, bad things happen.

For example, it can actually stop nerve cells from reaching their proper places in the brain.

That's already bad enough. But what makes this study even more disturbing is that the protein that appears to be impeding KCC2 due to BPA exposure is the same one that may be responsible for Rett's syndrome.

That's a severe form of autism that happens only to girls -- and sure enough, the experiments found that BPA exposure had much more of an impact on female nerve cells than on those of males, according to the study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

It's too early to say whether BPA is responsible for Rett's syndrome -- but since this hormone-like chemical has been linked before to developmental and behavioral problems in children including autism and autism-like conditions, I tend to believe that where there's smoke, there's fire.

And there's an awful lot of smoke here.

Bottom line is no good could come from BPA exposure at any age, as it has been linked to obesity, diabetes, sexual dysfunction, and more even in adults -- and in children this stuff can clearly do even more damage.

Avoiding it isn't easy, as I just told you -- but make it your mission to reduce your levels as much as you can, for yourself and your family.

God bless,

Dr. Mark Stengler

Is your floor making your kids sick?

Phthlates make you and your children sick from plastics and toys they get in touch with;  even from air fresheners.

Dear Reader,

You've cleared your home of the bottles and cans that contain harmful BPA.

Your family is eating organic fruits and vegetables at every meal to avoid exposure to pesticides.

But have you swept your home clean of every harmful household product? Can you finally breathe a sigh of relief that your home is safe enough for the people you love most in the world?

Maybe not.

If your home contains PVC flooring, your kids could be absorbing harmful chemicals.

Research in Sweden found that children's bodies can absorb the phthalates found in PVC flooring materials. Phthalates have been linked to asthma, allergies, and other chronic diseases. And it turns out they can be absorbed through the skin.

A couple of the phthalates found in kids with PVC flooring in their bedrooms are related to DEHP and BBzP, both of which are banned for use in toys for small children.

This isn't the first time that phthalates have come under fire in the e-Tips. About five years ago, we uncovered a common hiding place: household air fresheners. We also told you about how phthalates can negatively affect reproductive health.

The bottom line is they're scary stuff, and they're hard to get rid of.

Sure, it's easy to toss a can of air freshener. But ripping up an entire floor is another story. That's why it's important for us to know exactly what makes up the building materials used in our homes. We need to fight for full disclosure--and for bans on the harmful household products that have no place in our homes.

Yours in good health,

Christine O'Brien

Vanquishing the virus

Q: I've been struggling with a long-term case of fatigue. My physician believes a good part of my problem is related to a virus (Epstein-Barr). How do you treat chronic viral infections such as Epstein-Barr virus?

Dr. Wright: Epstein-Barr is one of the most common causes of chronic fatigue and is actually a strain of the herpes virus. The best natural treatment for it is the mineral selenium.

Selenium inhibits the duplication of the entire herpes family of viruses as well as other retroviruses. I usually recommend 250-300 micrograms to be taken twice daily (be sure to stick to this dosage range, as selenium can be toxic at levels above 1,500- 2,000 micrograms daily).

Other things that can be used to help reduce levels of the virus (but usually require a physician's help) include high-dose intravenous vitamin C, as well as carefully administered intravenous ozone, hydrogen peroxide, and ultraviolet blood irradiation.

Dear Reader,

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a dangerous chemical that's been linked to heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes in numerous studies.

In a five-year study, men with detectable levels of BPA in their bloodstreams showed signs of serious reproductive problems: more than twice the risk of lower sperm motility, more than three times the risk of lowered sperm concentration and lower sperm virility, and more than four times the risk of a lower sperm count (all compared to men without detectable levels).

By the way, when we're talking about people with detectable levels, we're talking about an estimated 90 percent of the United States population.

It gets worse--BPA builds up in our systems much more quickly than anyone thought when concerns about the chemical were first raised. Up until last year, studies on BPA were based on one-time administrations. Then, a breakthrough study found that when we take in BPA through eating (it transfers from the containers in which the food is stored), it hangs around in the body and accumulates rapidly.

Other countries around the world have banned it in food packaging. Here in the United States, the FDA refused to ban BPA two years ago. Instead, they said that we should take "reasonable measures" to avoid it. Which is absolutely ridiculous, considering the sheer number of products that include BPA in their packaging.

In the two years since their initial decision, the news about BPA has only gotten worse. So you'd think, in revisiting the issue, they'd change their tune.

Nope.

In a response to a petition filed by the National Resources Defense Council (who, by the way, have been at the FDA about this since 2008. This is the first time they've gotten a serious response--41 months later--and it took a lawsuit to get it), the FDA is still saying there's not enough evidence to call for a ban.

Yeah, you might want to read that again. "Not enough evidence to call for a ban." Unbelievable, right?

The NRDC didn't mince words in their response: "The agency has failed to protect our health and safety in the face of scientific studies that continue to raise disturbing questions about the long-term effects of BPA exposures, especially in fetuses, babies and young children."

I guess we can take some small comfort in the fact that the folks at the FDA haven't completely written off a ban--they say they'll "continue in [our] broader and more comprehensive review of emerging data and information." Whew--good to know you guys are on top of this!

Really though--here you have a chemical that offers absolutely no benefits to human health, but plenty of threats. But that's not enough for the FDA. What are they waiting for--BPA to sprout fangs and start biting people as they do their grocery shopping?

Yours in good health,

Christine O'Brien

Banish bladder infections

Q: I followed your tip about using D-mannose for a bladder infection, but it didn't work. Is there anything else I can try?

Dr. Wright: D-mannose, the natural, good-tasting simple sugar, whisks away the E. coli bacteria that cause approximately 90 percent of all bladder infections. For the 10 percent for whom it doesn't work, there is hope. This treatment is also a completely natural one that was actually first described in the 1920s by physicians at the Mayo Clinic.

Actually, this treatment will eliminate 100 percent of all bladder infections, but it doesn't taste nearly as good as D-mannose, and in many cases requires a prescription. In addition, although it happens very rarely, it can cause an allergic reaction. So I generally recommend trying D-mannose first and using this remedy as back up if that doesn't work--and of course, you should always consult with a physician skilled in natural medicine.

So what is it? Long-time readers of Nutrition & Healing may have guessed already: It's saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI), the natural remedy so versatile that Holly and I never travel without it (although the Transportation Security Agency is certainly making it more difficult to do so).

We were at a convention in a mountainous region of Wyoming, miles from medical facilities, when a friend who was also attending started looking distressed and asked Holly (who's an R.N.) if there was anything she could do about a bladder infection she felt coming on. She'd already asked the hotel about cranberry juice, but they didn't have any in stock. She and her husband were hoping to avoid the long drive to the nearest small hospital in the middle of the night.

Holly went back to our room and got one of our two small travel-size bottles of SSKI (we always bring two, just for circumstances like this: We don't want to be without at least one for us!). After making sure she had no iodine allergy, she advised our friend to take 15 drops of SSKI in lots of water (as effective as it is, even well diluted, SSKI doesn't taste at all good) every three to four hours while she was awake. There's no need to get up from sleeping to take it, since the iodide stays in the bladder and keeps on killing germs until the bladder is emptied. You can and should take more then. In fact, as Holly advised our friend, you should keep taking it until all your symptoms have been gone for at least 24 hours.

The next day, our friend was looking considerably better, and two days later she told Holly she was cured.

As I mentioned earlier, physicians from the Mayo Clinic wrote about this therapy decades ago. And their original recommendation is the same one I still use today: 15 drops every three to four hours. It worked then, and it works today. But remember: don't take iodine or iodide long-term without advice from a physician skilled and knowledgeable in natural medicine, since too much iodine or iodide can suppress the function of the thyroid gland.

SSKI is the major ingredient in Tri-Quench (Scientific Botanicals), available from the Tahoma Clinic Dispensary, some natural food stores, and compounding pharmacies. It's also available by prescription through compounding pharmacies as just SSKI.

Bear in mind we are not addressing anyone's personal situation and you should rely on this for informational purposes only. Please consult with your own physician before acting on any recommendations contained herein.

Dear Reader,

Maybe you're getting ready to do your taxes.

Or maybe you have a big report to prepare for work.

Whatever the case may be, if you've got a mentally taxing task coming up, you might want to raid your pantry before getting started.

Because according to a new study in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Psychopharmacology, there's an herb that could very well boost your mental performance--and all you have to do is smell it.

Shakespeare was on to something when he wrote Ophelia's line, "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance." The herb has long held a reputation for improving memory, and has been used as a symbol of remembrance at both weddings and funerals in Europe.

According to this new study, when healthy volunteers were exposed to the aroma of rosemary, they were able to perform better on mental arithmetic tasks. The more of rosemary's active chemical component that absorbed into their blood, the better their speed and accuracy on the tasks. Higher levels of absorption were achieved by adjusting the period of time for which volunteers were exposed: 4, 6, 8, or 10 minutes.

The chemical component of rosemary essential oil responsible for the brain boost is called 1,8-cineole. In the study, this component seemed to help attention, working memory, and processing.

The researchers are interested in studying the implications of this finding for Alzheimer's research. It's been previously determined that 1,8-cineole can inhibit acetylcholinesterase, which is a key enzyme in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's.

Who knows where this research will take them. But in the meantime, you can get the benefits of rosemary now. Many natural stores and grocery stores sell various essential oils, which is the most potent way to get a strong sniff of rosemary.

Yours in good health,

Christine O'Brien

Break the bottle habit?

Q: What's your stance on bottled water? Some people tell me I shouldn't drink it because the plastic bottles are poisonous. Others tell me I should steer clear of tap water because of fluoride and chlorine. What should I do?

Dr. Wright: Most municipal water supplies do contain fluoride and chlorine, which have both been implicated in numerous health concerns. So bottled water does seem like the wise alternative. However, the plastic bottles holding that water contain a substance called bisphenol A, a chemical that mimics estrogen activity in both humans and animals. Bisphenol A is a potential carcinogen and may also increase your risk of Type II diabetes.

Unfortunately, avoiding it isn't as easy as boycotting bottled water: Bisphenol A is one of the 50 top-produced chemicals in the world. And in addition to being the building block of most plastic products, it's also one of the primary ingredients in the resins used to line over 100 billion different canned products.

Of course, Bisphenol A has been in the news lately--and people are finally starting to catch on to its dangers. But who knows how long it will be until it's wiped out from the supermarket shelves? In the meantime, invest in a high-quality water filter that will eliminate the potentially harmful chemicals from your tap water (and make sure to use only filtered water to make ice cubes).
