I attended the birth celeb and surprises of surprises.  He is herbal medicine practitioner and he has lots of herbs in his yard:  tanlad, ginseng, sambong, and guyabano.  He knows of herbal plant cures for high blood diabetes, UTI, and even prostate problems  He discussed earlier the health benefits of sambong.

He praised the benefits of ginseng, apart from its role in ED.  He said this is good for digestive functions, including the adhesions of intestine.

He has ginseng plants in his yard.  I look forward to planting this in the future.   The ginseng plant looks familiar.

It is his birthday today.

Re Diabetes cures

Regarding the "diabetes" of child

1.  It does not look as bad as was pointed by Dr. Z.  Dr. Zs regimen and approach has been different since Tita  died.  It is all drugs about symptomatic treatment  ie to remove sugar.  My bs was 6.7  and I am alive up to now.  There has to be some sensible way to survive. Dr. Zs dictum before was wellness:

    1. Maintain IBW
    2.  Exercise
    3.  Diet and nutrition  (primal diet)
    4.  Monitor BS with a good glucometer
    4.  Avoid toxic foods:

        1.  apat ang paa
        2.  salt
        3.  sugar
        4 fatty food

         1.  Food with aspartame and HFCS
         2.   Fast food (that are oily etc)
         3.  softdrinks even noodles and 3 in one coffee

2  Diabetes is not a disease but a metabolic disorder resulting from body's inability to metabolize sugar for use of the body.  Too little sugar is worse than having too much

When there is a diabetes, blood sugar spikes and declines too low (and hypoglycemia results)

    Antidote:

    1.  Graze  - avoid large meals but eat small quantity of food every 2 hours

    2. Fight off hypo with a teaspoon of brown sugar, or milo, or with ordinary coke (1/2 glass)

3.  Diabetes is a lifestyle disease resulting from:

    1.  Sedentary living that results in
    2.  Obesity
    3. Stress
    4.  Lack of sleep

About 1/3 of the world is obese;  obesity leads to diabetes.  Less is more

Solution:

1. Avoid stressful job,
2.  Lessen weight
3.  Exercise
4.  Have plenty of rest .  Sleep early

Skipping breakfast, or eating a light breakfast may not be your best way to fight obesity.  This was the result of study in Obesity Society'scientific meeting.  Eating a full breakfast, rich in carbohydrate like egg and sausage help curb appetite and over eating.

"Pancakes and toast may not be your best breakfast options if you're trying to lose weight. New research presented this week at The Obesity Society's annual scientific meeting in Atlanta shows that high protein sausage- and egg-based breakfasts curb hunger better than high-carb morning meals or skipping breakfast entirely.

The study, which tested the impact of various types of breakfast in 18- to 55-year-old women, suggest the traditional American diet (which typically includes more protein at dinner and less at breakfast) may be a contributing factor to the nation's obesity crisis.
 

"Eating a breakfast rich in protein significantly improves appetite control and may help women to avoid overeating later in the day," said lead researcher Kevin C. Maki, a scientist with Biofortis Clinical Research, a Mérieux NutriSciences company."

Yes what is more addictive than cocaine.

It is refined sugar.

Using magnetic imaging of the brain, researchers confirmed highly processed carbs stimulate brain center involved in reward and craving, resulting in excess hunger.

The study which was published in  American Journal of Nutrition subjected men between ages of 18 to 35 to functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.  And the subjects were fed high and low GI food.  The high GI diet initially resulted spiked the blood sugar level and then crashed which stimulated the brain center called nucleus accumbens the brain center for addictive behavior.

Thus if you consume an amount of sugar,your reach a level of tolerance, in which you are not pleased anymore, thus you have to consume more to reach the same level of taste.  This is according to Dr. Robert Lustig.  It is interesting to note that sugar is top ingredient in many processed food products in US like Prego, as spaghetti sauce.

Thus, this consuming passion to eat causes obesity.  Obesity is now a disease in USA.

Food manufacturers have mastered the art of adding the right amount of sugar to reach the point of bliss.  And they have mastered other taste as saltiness, sweetness -  the science of addictive eating.

Dr. Mercola recommends avoiding plenty or processed food and sugary items.  Instead he recommends exercise and drinking black coffee.  The latter can reduce addiction to this cause of obesity

Despite repeated advertising claims, diet soda (I used to drink plenty of Zero and Mega drinks) with aspartame actually cause cravings, weight gain, obesity and even diabetes.

In a Journal entitled Appetite  aspartame and saccharine caused more weight gain than sucrose.

As for the link between cancer and aspartame and cancer, aspartame has been found to induce cancer of the liver in male rats.  In a longest study between cancer and other causes, aspartame has been linked to Hodgkin's lymphoma and leukemia.  The study came out in 2012

For splenda (sucrolose), the rating for splenda (I shifted to splenda from aspartame) has been downgraded from safe to caution

If you're a health conscious individual, you likely cringe at even the mention of fast food.
McDonald's. Burger King. Wendy's.

AHHHH!

We all know that fast food for the most part is REALLY bad news, so if you're going to go "out to eat", whatever you do, don't eat fast food. Instead, try a nice sit-down restaurant in which an independent study recently determined that when compared to the golden arches and king of burgers, those who choose sit-down restaurants wind up eating TWICE as many calories than those that choose fast food.

What?

Eye-opener: What appears to be healthy at a restaurant, very likely aint healthy.

The reality is that sit down restaurant meals, due to their exceptionally large portions and often irresponsible preparation methods (with respect to calorie content) give very little regard to health and weight management. Restaurants want you to LOVE the food, be satisfied, and come back. For the most part, with few exceptions, that's their number one goal...and it comes at the expense of your health and that oh so lovely figure you're trying to obtain and maintain.

Does that mean you should never eat out? No, we eat out all the time. But you have to be aware of what goes down, and YOU have to be the one in control of the meal. Here are some tips:

1. When you order, ask the server to have half of your entree bagged up to go and half brought out to you. Instant 50% reduction in calories!

Chances are, you'll be just as satisfied with 1/2 the normal portion, but when the whole thing is on your plate in front of you, you'll always eat more just because it's there.

2. Give VERY specific instructions on how you want your food prepared. For example, order your meat grilled with absolutely no sauces, butter, etc. Skip the "pre-made" salad dressings and request olive oil and vinegar instead. Ask how things are prepared -- it's your server's job to answer your questions and you're paying them to be an expert and deliver to you exactly what you want. If you don't want a boatload of hidden calories, make sure you don't get them by speaking up and clarifying what you want.

Implement those 2 tips and you'll avoid 75% of the calories in a typical restaurant entree.

TV and electronic gadgets linked to obesity

The presence of TV and other electronic gadgets has been linked to obesity.  The direct connection could be that the children sleep late, and lack of sleep cause loss of leptin level which leads to more appetite, and less metabolism of fats. In a survey of 5th graders surveyed, 50% said they either had TV and other electronic devices.

Too little sleep can lead to:

l.  Obesity,

2.  Diabetes,

3.  High blood pressure;

4.  Weight gain,

5.  Accelerated aging,

6.  Risk of having cancer

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Trust for American Health predicts that half of the US population will be obese .  That is only 12 years from now.

That will mean $48.00 billion additional health care costs because of  7.9 million new cases of diabetes, 5 million of chronic heart diseases and  400,000 cancer cases, all due to to obesity

All of these can be avoided by:  exercise, sufficient sleep, sufficient exposure to sunshine, emotional health and balancing, and proper nutrition.

And what is the cause of obesity?   The fat burning switch which can be turned on by fructose.  Taking fructose, causing rise in fat, and uric acid.

The role of Leptin in weight loss

We should understand the role of leptin on appetite and weight loss.  It the singlemost important hormone that regulates our hunger and energy level.  When leptin level increase, it signals our brain that we are full and we stop eating;  when it decreases, leptin orders the body appetite to increase and eat.

Leptin is produced by our adipose tissues;  thus fat people have more leptin.

If you lose a lot of fat via liposuction or via crash diet, your leptin level fall and your craving to eat is stimulated.  Thus crash diet or liposuction will not make you slim;  the effect will be temporary.

Leptin resistance.  High fatty diet and high fructose diet stimulate leptin resistance.  Thus even if leptin levels are high, eating and craving continues.

Some advice:

l.  Have plenty of sleep (leptin levels increase while sleeping)

2.  Avoid sugar; ( to avoid leptin sensitivity)

3.  Eat plenty of Omega 3 fish oil (they increase leptin sensitivity.  It was found out that people eating salmon had higher leptin levels.) and thus were less fat.

As you might have seen, there's a new documentary this week on HBO that features the obesity crisis, and there's some controversy as to the take home message of this show.

One of the nutritionists out there that I highly respect his opinion has a few things to say about this documentary and this is worth paying attention to... I'll let him take it from here...

"The Weight of the Nation" Documentary Sends the Wrong Message 
by Dr. Jonny Bowden, Nutritionist, author of Unleash Your Thin

This week, a new documentary about the obesity crisis premieres on HBO. It's called "Weight of the Nation". And it's take-home message is wrong, wrong, wrong.

You'll be hearing a lot about this documentary, if you haven't already. And with good reason. It's the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the three major public-health institutions in America:

 1.   the nonprofit Institute of Medicine (IOM)
 2.   the CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention)
 3.   the NIH (National Institutes of Health)

"Weight of the Nation" is a sincere attempt to confront an epidemic (obesity) that costs the US alone 147 billion (in 2008, up from 78.5 billion in 1998).

"Obesity, and with it, diabetes are the only major health problems that are getting worse in this country, and they're getting worse rapidly", said CDC Director Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH, in a July 27 media briefing during the Weight of the Nation Conference. "Beyond the economic costs are the disability, the suffering and the early deaths caused by obesity", he added.

Yet the documentary—made by sincere and well-meaning people, mind you- draws the wrong conclusion and sends the wrong message. And it's unlikely to make the slightest bit of difference in the obesity crisis because its focus is on the wrong enemy.

Here's why. For decades we've been being told that the reason we're so fat is that we eat too much and we exercise too little. This diagnosis is so widely accepted that to question it makes you a heretic. We've variously blamed high-fat foods, saturated fat, too much protein and sedentary lifestyles for this situation, but what we haven't blamed is the real cause of the problem:

Carbohydrate intolerance and a toxic diet.

The conventional wisdom is that we were never fatter, but the truth is we were fat during the depression, when bread lines and soup kitchens dotted the nation. As Gary Taubes asks in his superb Newsweek cover article The New Obesity Campaigns Have it All Wrong, "How can we blame the obesity epidemic on gluttony and sloth if we easily find epidemics of obesity throughout the past century in populations that barely had food to survive and had to work hard to earn it?"

When you get real close to it, even the common idea that we're fat because we don't exercise doesn't pass the smell test. "Why is the world full of obese individuals who exercise regularly?" asks Taubes. Indeed. The Weight of the Nation shows construction workers in Arkansas laboring at back-breaking jobs that involve running up ladders with the equivalent of a 50 pound backpack, and lifting very heavy stuff all day long. If it were all about exercise, guys like this should be svelte.

They're not.

And if it were all about eating too many calories, how do you explain the fact that some medications have as a "side effect" weight gain of anywhere from 20-140 pounds? Did the folks who gained that weight on the meds all of a sudden start eating twice as much?

No.

The fact is that weight gain is driven by hormones, and the most important hormone for weight gain—insulin- is driven by the engine of carbohydrates. It's not that we're eating too many calories (though that may be a part of the problem). And it's not that we're not exercising— (that is a huge problem, but not just from the point of view of weight).

The problem is that we're eating too many carbohydrates. And the ones we're eating are all the wrong ones.

We've been blaming fat (especially saturated fat) for years. Our health "authorities" have been promoting for decades what one writer called "the greatest nutritional experiment in history"—a high carbohydrate low fat diet. This grain- and carb-heavy diet—very similar to what's used to fatten cattle—was best illustrated by the god-awful, thankfully discredited USDA food pyramid of 1992. (Your tax dollars subsidize the production of the very foods that are making us fat and sick, in the form of a corporate giveaway known as the Farm Bill.)

And of course, all these wonderful foods, made from corn, sugar and wheat, are virtually "fat-free", so surely they're healthy, right?

But fat was never the enemy, though acting as if it were made a lot of companies a lot of money.

The real enemy was- and is—sugar.

In the 1980's, the FDA decided- in its infinite wisdom—that sugar was perfectly OK since the evidence against it "wasn't conclusive". (If you think this decision wasn't influenced by the sugar lobby, I'd like to talk to you about a lovely bridge I have for sale in beautiful Brooklyn.)

"While the government spent hundreds of millions trying to prove that salt and saturated fat are bad for our health, it spent virtually nothing on sugar", writes Taubes. "Had it targeted sugar then…our entire food culture….might have changed".

And maybe we might have been told that the real culprits in our diet are not  meat* and saturated fat, but the overwhelming amount of sugar and processed carbs that we consume on a daily basis, and that are increasingly being linked to diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's and virtually every other disease of aging.**(Note that when I say "meat" isn't to blame, I'm talking about pasture-raised meat, not the crap we get in supermarkets and restaurants.)

Meanwhile, we have a lot of very overweight people who not only suffer with their weight, but have the added indignity of being blamed for not having any "willpower".

"Lack of will isn't their problem", says Taubes. "It's the absence of advice that might actually work."

The aricle video begins by reciting the sad state of US health care.  $2.3 trillion.  But the reality:

l.   US is #49 in the quality of health care in the world;

2.  In the study of 8 countries, US came in last in terms of life that could have been saved from respiratory diseases, circulatory diseases, and  2nd in COPD death rate.

3.  Obesity is becoming an epidemic in the US.  By 2015, 75% of population will be overweight, and 4l% will be obese. We know obesity as  a predictor of good health.  Fat in the belly damages heart, liver and lungs.   People who are obese lead a shorter life.

There is a comical note in the video button that pharma are marketing the next illness not the next cure.  Many MDs and patients are just swallowing what pharma, med reps  are telling as the best cure. We patient take the best cure.  Hippocarates told us that there is a Dr. in all of us.

What rages around us that affect our health:
 

l.  The environment and the food around us are full of toxins and free radicals that damage our cells and body giving rise to inflammation  ---> cancer and other chronic diseases.

                                   Air quality gets worse daily in Angono and MM

2. We do not get enough nutrients from the food we eat and even Vit D. (at least in USA)


                              Let the sunshine in;  source of Vit. D, fights most diseases



                    These foods are rich in beta carotene, Vit C.:  yam, mangoes, melon, papaya

3.  Inflammation is the cause of most diseases.
