Dear Reader,

I don't mind getting older. I don't even mind looking a bit older.

But what I do mind is feeling older. And few things can make you feel as old as realizing that your ears -- and that big lump of neurons located between them -- aren't working quite like they used to.

Hearing and memory loss have long been considered normal parts of the aging process. As we get older, the television gets a little louder, and we spend more time grasping for those facts, figures, and names that used to be right there on the tips of our tongues.

Well, if you're looking to turn back the tide on hearing and memory loss, a substance found in your favorite red wine may be music to your ears -- and to your brain.

A laboratory study out of the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit has found that resveratrol, a compound found in grapes and red wine, may hold the key to keeping your hearing and brain sharp well into your golden years.

It's no secret that resveratrol can be a powerful ally in warding off inflammation, which has been linked to everything from hearing loss to Alzheimer's disease. So researchers took two groups of rats -- one received regular resveratrol supplements and the others, well, I guess they just ate whatever passes for regular rat chow -- and measured how they fared after prolonged exposure to damaging noise.

Turns out that the resveratrol rats weren't just hearing better -- they also showed fewer signs of cognitive decline.

I'm hoping the power of resveratrol isn't news to you. For years we've been telling you about its mighty antioxidant properties, and how it's been proven to improve your heart health and even ward off certain cancers.

And if it turns out that a glass of wine a night can do all that while keeping you hearing and thinking clearly, I think that's a prescription we could all live with.

Resveratrol has proven its worth in study after study, and its benefits are already being enjoyed by people like you all around the world. So if you want to keep your ears -- and your brain -- razor sharp for years to come, work with your doctor to start a resveratrol supplement program.

And the next time you and your friends tip back a glass of red wine, toast to their health -- and to yours. The resveratrol will do the rest.

Ancient natural treatment brings allergy relief

Well, the good news is that spring is in the air. The bad news is that pollen is too.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies like me, you know what a drag they can be. Instead of spending your spring smelling the roses, you spend it sifting through a medicine cabinet full of nasty nasal sprays and dodgy prescription pills.

Well, some much-needed -- and pill-free -- relief may be on the way, thanks to a new study out of Germany.

Here's the scoop. Researchers assigned 422 people with seasonal allergies to receive a handful of treatments, including acupuncture. And what they found was amazing -- after eight weeks of acupuncture, a staggering 71% of patients reported improvement in their seasonal allergy symptoms.

According to a scale used to measure allergy symptoms, the severity of these patients' symptoms decreased by an impressive 37%.

Let's be honest -- even over-the-counter allergy medications are nothing to fool around with. Common allergy treatments have been linked to drowsiness, constipation, irregular heartbeats, seizures, and more.

Acupuncture, on the other hand, is a perfectly safe and side-effect-free treatment that has proven itself time and again over literally centuries of research and use.

So if common seasonal allergy medications have let you down -- and, believe me, you're not alone if they have -- or if you just want to try a safer remedy with proven long-term health benefits, give acupuncture a try.

Find a licensed acupuncturist in your area, and see if you can spend this spring sniffle-free.

Yours in good health,

Bob Reagan

For someone who believes in our freedoms, this is a very personal question. I promise it's worth your while to see it here...

Dear Reader,

If you've ever wondered what your life is worth to your insurance company, I've tracked down a depressing answer for you.

About $19.

That's how much insurance companies save on typical office visits as they increasingly try to drive you to seek your medical care online. Many insurers are starting to offer "e-visits" where you log onto a website, fill out a form describing your symptoms, and a doctor gets back to you with a diagnosis.

Insurers will tell you it's the best thing to happen to medicine since stethoscopes and germicide. They'll try to convince you that you can get great medical care without ever leaving your couch.

But what they won't tell you is the real reason they'd prefer you didn't pay your doctor an office visit -- it saves them cash.

Keep that in mind when you hear reports about a new study out of Pittsburgh that concluded that e-visits are just as effective as office appointments for treating some illnesses.

Researchers looked at more than 8,000 e-visits and office visits for patients seeking care for sinus infections or urinary tract infections at four primary care practices in Pittsburgh. Whether you paid your doctor an e-visit or an office visit, you had a 7 percent chance or less of returning three weeks later for a follow-up for the same condition. In other words, you have the same chance of being misdiagnosed.

Well, isn't that refreshing?

The researchers then went on to reveal the real motives behind their study -- they estimated that each e-visit is about $19 cheaper than an office visit. Over the course of a year, that could add up to billions in savings for insurance companies.

Good for them, and bad for you. Here's why.

Unfortunately, this research is not surprising. Going to the doctor is already starting to feel like visiting a car wash -- you hand a clerk some cash and you're in and out in 10 minutes. Too many doctor appointments are focused on matching your symptoms with the latest Big Pharma prescription pill.

And that's exactly what's happening with e-visits -- researchers found that patients who visited their docs online were more likely to be prescribed an antibiotic. Doctors were throwing prescriptions at the problem "to be on the safe side" and moving on to the next case.

Let's face it -- if you feel like you can get the same standard of care from a computer that you get from your doctor, it's time for a new doctor. Doctors -- and there are so many great ones out there -- should take the time to get to know you, your health history, and your concerns.

And to do that, they need to see you. These personal visits give your doctor the opportunity to observe other dangerous symptoms you might not even be complaining about -- like a mole or lesion that needs investigating, or a change to your speech or personality.

Doctors are trained observers -- and they can't observe you via an online form. Remember that as insurers try to force these new cyber visits on you. It may be good business for them, but you're worth a heck of a lot more than $19.

Take 40 winks and call me in the morning

Those dreaded senior moments can happen to anyone. Some mornings when you wake up you have a better chance of finding Jimmy Hoffa than your car keys. You bump into a nice gentleman you've met a dozen times, and you just can't remember his name.

These mental slips can be awfully frustrating, but there may be a promising and simple solution on the horizon.

A new study from the University of California, Berkeley found that we sleep more poorly as we age, and that this lack of quality sleep may be causing our memory problems.

In their study, the Berkeley researchers asked a group of test subjects in their 20s to complete memory exercises, and compared their results to test subjects in their 60s and 70s.

Well, you can guess how that went. The youngsters scored 25 percent higher on the memory tests than their senior counterparts.

But here's where things get interesting -- after each group had a night's sleep, they retook the test. This time, the younger subjects outscored the older participants' by a staggering 55 percent!

When researchers took brain scans of their subjects while they slept, the reason became clear. Older subjects were not enjoying as deep a sleep as their younger counterparts -- and this is probably what was stunting their memories.

Sleep is vital to our memory and overall good health. If you're struggling with your sleep, Dr. Wright has written about the benefits of supplementing with melatonin or with chaste tree extract, which helps increase your body's natural production of melatonin.

The important thing is to take your sleep problems seriously, because they have health consequences. Work with a doctor skilled in natural healing to find a safe solution that works for you.

P.S. -- If you're still having trouble slipping off to sleep don't despair, and whatever you do don't reach for an over-the-counter sleep aid or a prescription bottle. With those un-natural pills you run the risk of becoming a virtual zombie. Safe natural sleep CAN be yours. Discover the secrets to calm, relaxing sleep night after night. How Carolyn Reversed Her Alzheimer's
by Disobeying Her doctor

This all-natural protein melts away the brain-clogging mineral that triggers memory loss, dementia and Alzheimer's--and cuts brain cell death in half!

And yet this Nobel Prize-winning discovery is being ignored by 99% of doctors

That's why I'd like to tell you about Carolyn. . .

Click here to see how she reversed her Alzheimer's without drugs--and in just a few weeks!

Dear Reader,

At first, it sounded crazy. It seemed like horrible news.

Earlier this month, a federal appeals court decided that off-label drug marketing should be protected as free speech.

It's totally legal for doctors to prescribe drugs for off-label uses (uses for which the drugs haven't been approved). But the same freedom hasn't extended to manufacturers of the drugs. That's why some pharmaceutical giants have had to fork over billions in lawsuits related to off-label promotions. And it's why in 2008, a Big Pharma sales rep was sentenced to probation and community service for pushing a narcolepsy drug for everything from excessive daytime sleepiness to chronic pain.

Flash forward to 2012. A federal appeals court threw out the conviction, saying the rep's First Amendment free speech rights had been violated. Circuit Judge Denny Chin said that the decision would mean that the public would be able to make more "intelligent and well-informed" decisions about the use of prescription drugs.

I say Judge Chin must either be incredibly naïve or he's just got a funny sense of humor. It's marketing plain and simple--it's certainly not helping anyone be more informed. And that's why there's always been a line between what doctors can say about unapproved drug applications and what the companies that make the drugs can say.

I mean, if you start letting companies push drugs for unapproved conditions, why seek FDA approval for a drug in the first place?

But here's the thing. In arguing his case, the drug rep said that it shouldn't be a crime for drug companies and their reps to "truthfully promote" drugs for legal, off-label uses when doctors can do the same thing. The court agreed, pointing to the fact that a 2011 Supreme Court ruling found that speech aiding in drug marketing is protected speech.

Chin also wrote the following: "The First Amendment directs us to be especially skeptical of regulations that seek to keep people in the dark for what the government perceives to be their own good."

Let that sink in for a second. Now, are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Regulatory attacks on supplements and other natural approaches to health have always been about keeping us in the dark for "our own good." But maybe there's a change on the way. After all--if the First Amendment applies to drug marketing, it surely should apply to supplement marketing.

In fact, the former chief counsel of the FDA even noted that if this ruling is upheld, the FDA will be forced to shift its focus regarding Big Pharma advertising to the "kinds of speech that are more likely to harm consumers, such as false or misleading marketing versus something that is not approved."

Personally, I think a shift in focus for the FDA is something that's long overdue.

So there's never been a better (or more exciting) time to keep a close eye on developments in natural health. We could be witnessing the dawn of a new age--one in which cherry growers aren't slapped with warning letters for telling the truth about the major health benefits of eating the fruit (subscribers will need to log in to view the linked article). One in which clinic workers aren't held at gunpoint for prescribing vitamins.

You've already taken the first step--but if you want to keep an even closer watch, there's no better way than receiving updates from one of the greatest pioneers of natural health: Dr. Wright himself. Click here to subscribe to his monthly newsletter, and you'll be among the first to know about the developments in this exciting new age.

Yours in good health,

Christine O'Brien

The story on statins

Q: I have read several e-Tips saying statin drugs are dangerous and aren't effective. But others say they lower bad cholesterol and that, despite the drawbacks, this is a good thing. So, what do I believe?

Dr. Wright: With all due respect to the opinion that lower cholesterol is better, I have to ask, better than what?

In the end, I can't help but say "So what?" if statins lower "bad" cholesterol. While they lower your "bad" cholesterol, these patent medications won't actually increase your chances of living longer and you're likely to experience adverse events while you're taking them.

There are many natural methods of lowering your cholesterol levels, not to mention improving your overall cardiovascular health (which encompasses much more than just monitoring your cholesterol). For more information on natural approaches to heart health, search "cholesterol" or "heart health" in the archive at www.wrightnewsletter.com.

2x spearmint for 5 days results in hair growth suppression

I am more interested in the fact that drinking spearmint tea twice a day for five days  before ovulation resulted in decrease of testosterone and increase in estradiol and thus caused decrease in growth of unwanted hair.

Thus less use for shaving and hair removal drugs, and methods. (including laser.)

Dear Reader,

It sure doesn't look like summer is on its way. All I see from my window is grey above and raised umbrellas below.

But there are plenty of other clues that the warmer months are ahead. One big one: The mainstream has started its yearly beating of the SPF drum.

The beat is a little out of rhythm, though. The industry has failed to meet an FDA labeling requirement to make levels of sunscreen protection more clear. Specifically, the FDA wanted changes clarifying which brands protect against UVB and which protect against UVA rays (the scary ones). Current SPF numbers are mostly related to UVB rays, because those are the ones that lead to sunburn.

Manufacturers are also supposed to stop claiming their products are waterproof or sweatproof--they have to say they're "resistant" now.

The requirement was introduced last year. Sunscreen makers were given until next month to get those new labels on the shelf.

Of course, they're having a "hard time" meeting the deadline (shocking, I know). So now they're being given until December. This leaves SPF-seeking consumers scratching their heads for another year.

Here's a little secret, though: None of this really matters. In fact, no matter what the labels say, you can walk right on by that sunscreen display without giving the bottles so much as a glance.

Yes, sun exposure can contribute to skin cancer. But there are major benefits of the sun that you can't get slathering yourself in a layer of potentially dangerous chemicals. You can actually reduce your skin cancer risk with limited sun exposure, an excellent diet, and specific supplements (plenty of folate and vitamin A). The summer is prime time to soak up the rays that will help your body make vitamin D.

Sunscreens are dangerous for many reasons. They encourage people to stay outside longer under the assumption they're protected. Which of course leads to more damage. UVA rays aren't always blocked. These cause deeper damage while the sunscreen works against UVB damage. So you keep the redness (an important warning of too much exposure) away while the UVA rays are wreaking havoc deeper in your body.

Plus, they're chock full of potentially toxic chemicals, including some compounds that, when coupled with sun exposure, actually do MORE damage to the skin and others that cause cancer to spread, as Dr. Wright outlines in the April 2012 issue of Nutrition & Healing. If you're a subscriber, I highly recommend you hold on to that article. It's an essential guide to the benefits of the sun and the reasons for avoiding sunscreens.

And of course, sunscreens keep you from the biggest benefit of the sun: vitamin D. Several studies have shown that strict use of sunscreen may induce vitamin D deficiency.

So, if we're taking sunscreen out of the picture, how do you get the benefits of the sun without the potential damage? The old-fashioned way! Shade and protective clothing.

Dr. Wright recommends getting enough sun exposure on your bare (sunscreen-free) face and arms to turn your skin just slightly pink. At that point, head back into the shade.

Enjoy your fun in the sun this summer. Just stay sensible and you can protect yourself from sun damage and get the true benefits of the sun.

Yours in good health,

Christine O'Brien

Sip the hair away

Q: I have excess facial hair. I find myself wanting to hide my face whenever I leave the house. I can't stand the pain of waxing, and those creams just smell horrible. What can I do?

Dr. Wright: Sip a cup of strong spearmint tea to decrease the excess testosterone production that can lead to excess body hair.

Researchers in Turkey asked 21 women with excess facial and body hair to drink one cup of strong spearmint tea twice daily for five days in the pre-ovulatory phases of their menstrual cycles. Total testosterone wasn't reduced, but there was a significant reduction in free testosterone and a significant increase in estradiol--this can put the brakes on the stimulation of unwanted hair growth.

Enjoy a cup on a regular basis, but don't overdo it--higher testosterone does, after all, stimulate a healthy libido.
