Depressed women face bigger stroke risk

I've never understood it myself, but many people still feel shame and embarrassment when it comes to depression. They won't talk about it, and they certainly won't seek help.

Well, I'm here to tell you that you've got nothing to be embarrassed about -- and there's certainly no shame in seeking help.

The real shame is in what could happen to you if you just let it go, because depression can lead to other serious health risks, especially in women. And ladies, if you're depressed right now, you could face double the risk of a stroke, according to one new study out of Australia.

We've seen this link made before. But in other studies, it's generally been found in older women. One study a couple years back found that depression increases the risk of stroke in senior women by nearly a third.

In the new study, however, the higher stroke risk was found even in younger women -- including women in their 40s and 50s.

Now, to be clear about this, not all cases of stroke linked depression are caused by the condition. In some cases, it could be caused by treatment -- because depression meds, especially common SSRIs, are also known to raise the risk of stroke in women.

But whether it's the drugs or the condition, it's pretty clear to me that there are two actions everyone -- men and women alike -- needs to take when facing serious mood problems.

First, never let depression go untreated. Along with increasing your risk of stroke, unchecked depression can also lead to serious heart problems. Depressed people are also more likely to engage in unhealthy behavior, including excessive drinking, smoking, and poor diet.

And second, avoid medications if you can (especially those SSRI drugs I just mentioned) and turn to natural therapies instead. While drugs do little to correct the underlying causes of depression, supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins can actually give the brain exactly what it's been lacking -- easing the depression and improving your overall health at the same time.

Depression packs blood sugar risk

Restaurant food isn't worth its salt

It's tough enough to eat healthy foods at home. But out in a restaurant, it's almost impossible -- because even seemingly healthy dishes are often loaded with a not-so-secret ingredient: salt.

Chain restaurants have been very loud about their supposed attempts to make their meals healthier, including the use of less salt. But a new study finds there's not much action to back up all that noise.

In fact, sodium levels have actually risen by an average of 2.4 percent over six years, according to a look at menu items from 78 chain restaurants. And in six of the menu items examined, sodium levels shot up by 30 percent or more.

Processed foods sold in supermarkets did a little better -- but not much. Sodium levels in 402 common packaged food items fell by an average of just 3.5 percent, according to the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association: Internal Medicine.

When you consider that processed foods often contain double or triple the recommended limits for salt, 3.5 percent is a very small drop in a very large bucket.

On the other hand, processed foods and chain restaurant meals are unhealthy no matter how much or how little salt they contain, so it's best to steer clear even when the sodium levels are truly low.

And that brings me to a question my patients often ask me: Just how much salt should we get anyway?

Recent headlines would lead you to believe it doesn't matter. I'm sure you've seen them, they all looked a little like this: "Cutting back on salt offers no health benefits."

Those headlines come from a recent recommendation from the Institute of Medicine -- but the agency didn't say there's no benefit to cutting back. In fact, they said there's plenty of evidence that the current recommended limit, 2,300 mg a day, is just about right.

Some people want to cut it further, to 1,500 mg a day for most, but the agency said there's no benefit to going that low -- and that's what led to those headlines.

Leave it to the mainstream media to get the story wrong (as usual).

The best way to get just the right amount is to avoid packaged foods and fast food and prepare your own meals from fresh ingredients. Cook with spices, but don't add salt until you're ready to eat.

You'll eat better, tastier, healthier meals -- and you'll get just the right amount of sodium.

U.N. goes buggy for insect-based diets

Got bugs?

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization hopes you do -- because the agency says eating bugs could be the answer to the global obesity epidemic.

I can practically hear everyone's response to that: EWWW!

Now, before I get into the downsides, I will say that bugs such as locusts, crickets, and grasshoppers have been a staple of the human diet going back to Biblical times, especially during famine, and for good reason: They're packed with protein and minerals and have surprisingly high levels of healthy fats.

I haven't eaten them myself, but people who do eat insects say it's not as bad as it sounds.

Some even swear they're delicious -- and in one blind taste test, 9 of 10 volunteers preferred meatballs made with half meat and half mealworm to meatballs made with 100 percent meat.

I wonder how they reacted when they were told what was really in those meatballs. My guess is more than a few started looking around for the nearest bathroom.

The downside to this, of course, is that they're still bugs. Most of us work very hard to keep them out of our food -- so I don't see this catching on, at least not here in the United States. I'm certainly not planning to eat them myself.

Besides, you can lose weight and stay healthy without eating a single insect.

Start by skipping processed foods (which may have more insect parts in them that you'd like to believe), and be sure to pass on anything with added sugar. Then, center your diet on healthy lean proteins from more familiar sources such as chicken as well as healthy fats from fish and nuts.

These are also the staples of the Mediterranean diet, which has given us some of the healthiest and longest-living people in the world -- and if they're doing it without eating bugs, you can, too.

Get moving to avoid stones

The study was on women, but a sedentary lifestyle is a kidney stone risk factor for men and women alike. Just bear in mind that it's only one risk factor -- and not even the biggest one.

That distinction goes to diet, especially processed foods, and poor diet is the real reason kidney stones have shot up by 70 percent over the past 16 years. Obesity -- a consequence of poor diet and processed foods -- is also a risk factor, and the new study finds that obese women are 80 percent more likely to get stones than normal-weight women.

Since obese men and women are often sedentary -- and typically are eating far too many processed foods -- that means they often have three major risk factors for kidney stones all at once.

On the other hand, that also means you can wipe out three major risk factors all at once with one simple lifestyle change.

Let your workout plan go to the dogs

Prescription drugs -- without a prescription
Who needs a doctor when you have drug commercials? It used to be that a patient would tell his doctor what was wrong, and the doctor would come up with a diagnosis and a treatment based on those symptoms, and some tests. These days, it's the other way around: A patient sees a commercial for a drug and says, "I need that!" Then, he marches into his doctor's office and demands a prescription. In theory, that extra step -- going to the doctor's office -- is supposed to stop people from self-medicating and taking drugs they don't need, too many drugs, or dangerous drugs without a doctor to keep an eye on things. In reality, once a patient asks for a drug he usually gets it. Usually, but not always -- and it drives the drug industry nuts that at least some patients are being stopped by stick-in-the-mud doctors who worry about little things like health, safety, side effects, and necessity. They want patients to be able to skip the middleman in the white jacket and get drugs on their own -- without a prescription. And right now, that drug-industry dream is about to become a reality. Under a nightmarish new plan, supposedly from the FDA, statins, diabetes drugs, asthma meds, and more could all be available over the counter. I say "supposedly" because I don't believe for a moment that the agency came up with this out of the clear blue sky. Behind the scenes, you can bet the drug industry has been pushing for this -- and pushing hard. Them, and insurance companies. Since insurers don't usually cover over-the-counter meds, this could save them billions (and cause patients who really need those meds to pay more than ever). The fact that the FDA is now actually proposing it should tell you everything you need to know about who really calls the shots in Washington. After all, no one else is clamoring for this. I haven't heard a patient yet say he wished he had easier access to statins. And doctors hate the idea. The American Medical Association even testified against it at an FDA hearing, and not just because docs could lose money if patients no longer need to come in for office visits to get prescriptions. It's because they'll be the ones left picking up the pieces when patients make bad drug choices -- something that's bound to happen when they're choosing medicines based on TV commercials.

You're slowly being poisoned
Want a shock? Go get tested for heavy metals. Your jaw will drop when you see the results. I know, because I see the reactions in my own clinic every single day. The reality is, nearly everyone has way too much lead, mercury, arsenic, and other toxic heavy metals inside them -- and these metals are a major cause of supposedly incurable conditions. I say "supposedly" because I often can cure or improve them, and I'll tell you everything you need to know to get started on your own cure in a moment. First, a new study confirms the role of toxic heavy metals in autoimmune disease -- especially among women battling disorders such as thyroid disease, MS, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and lupus. Researchers examined data on 2,047 women who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and compared blood levels of mercury to the presence of the autoantibodies made by the thyroid in response to autoimmune diseases. Sure enough, women with the highest blood levels of mercury were more than twice as likely to have high levels of the thyroglobulin antibody linked to those diseases. Now, you've probably heard that we all get exposed to metals, and that's true. It's almost impossible to avoid them completely. But you've probably also heard that the tiny levels we're routinely exposed to -- like the mercury in flu shots and amalgam dental fillings -- are harmless, and that's an out- and-out falsehood. Want proof? Look no further than the same new study, because the "high" levels of mercury linked to those high levels of the thyroglobulin autoantibody weren't high by current standards at all. In fact, they were under 5 micrograms of mercury per liter -- or well in line with what the mainstream considers "safe." You see, no amount of mercury, lead or other heavy metals is really safe. How do I know that? Simple: There's no known healthy function in the human body for these metals! If you suspect exposure to mercury or any other heavy metal, it's not enough to find the source and eliminate it. Heavy metals don't leave the body like other toxins. They accumulate -- and the more they accumulate, the sicker you get. The best way to rid your body of mercury and other toxic heavy metals is through chelation, but don't try any of the do-it-yourself treatments that reach the market from time to time. How do you fight fatigue?
