Makabuhay, Scientific Studies - Medical Uses

Diabetes and Tinospora Cordifolia
A research conducted in the Indian Medicine Research Laboratory in Sri Ramachandra University, studied the mechanism of the active ingredients of Tinospora cordifolia against key marker cells of insulin dependent glucose transporter-4 (Glut-4) and the predominant protein that influences glucose metabolism. According to results, the Glut-4 and the dominant protein were modulated by Tinospora cordifolia, Moreover, the uptake of glucose was likewise mediated suggesting the anti-diabetic properties of TC compounds. (Phytomedicine Feb 2013: Anti-diabetic Property of Tinospora Cordifolia)

Anti-Radiation Properties of Tinospora Cordifolia
In a clinical report from the Radiation and Cancer Biology Laboratory of the University of Rajasthan, India, the anti-radiation property of Tinospora cordifolia has been positively identified.  In the study of a group of male mice that was subjected to gamma radiation, results have shown that those pre-treated with Tinospora cordifolia extracts exhibited less testicular lesions as compared to a control group. This suggests the radiation protective activity of Tinospora cordifolia in testicular radiation induced lesions. (eCAM 2011: Radiation-induced Testicular Injury and its Amelioration by Tinospora Cordifolia Extract)

Anti-Cancer Properties of Tinospora cordifolia
The Division of Ethnopharmacology of Loyola College in India conducted a study on the effects of Tinospora cordifolia extracts against induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in rats to determine its potential use in cancer therapy. Results have shown that those treated with Tinospora cordifolia extracts (TCE) exhibited an increased level of antioxidants and detoxification enzymes, and decreased serum transaminase level and hepatic marker enzymes to near normal. TCE likewise reduced tumor incidence and reversed the damaged hepatocytes to normal. The study concludes that TCE exhibits preventive effect against chemically induced hepatocellular carcinoma in rats and further suggests that Tinospora cordifolia extract can be a potent chemopreventive drug for HCC. (Investigational New Drugs, August 2011: Chemopreventive potential of Epoxy clerodane diterpene from Tinospora cordifolia against diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatocellular carcinoma)

Tinospora cordifolia activity against Allergy
The efficacy of Tinospora cordifolia (TC) extract in patients of allergic rhinitis was assessed in a randomized double blind placebo controlled trial in the Department of Pharmacology, Indira Gandhi Medical College, India. Results have shown that those treated with Tinospora cordifolia extracts exhibited less symptoms as against those who were not. The statistical results indicated a significant difference that confirms the effectiveness of Tinospora  cordifolia against allergic rhinitis. (Journal of Ethnopharmacology. January 2005: Efficacy of Tinospora cordifolia in allergic rhinitis)
Effects of Tinospora cordifolia to Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis
The Division of Endocrinology, University of Göttingen in Germany conducted a laboratory investigation on the effects of beta-Ecdysone (ECD), a steroid found in Tinospora cordifolia extract on joints, epiphyseal cartilage and trabecular tissues in rats. The study has shown that rats subjected to treatment of ECD have developed thicker joint cartilage and thicker epiphyseal growth plate. The study suggests that Tinospora cordifolia has antiosteoporotic effects and may be of value in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis which is of increasing importance due to aging and obesity among individuals. (Phytomedicine, April 2010: Beneficial effects of beta-Ecdysone on the joint, epiphyseal cartilage tissue and trabecular bone in ovariectomized rats)

Carbonated drinks lead to elevated uric acid level

Live healthy and long

Rizal Philippines  | April 28, 2014

From Carbonated drinks com

Ever wondered how come some people do not eat food that are high in purines like meat, poultry, fish, beans, and yet have elevated uric acid level.  I was at a loss when I was asked by neighbors about this.

This post is a Eureka.  High consumption of softdrinks  can cause elevated uric acid level;    " It may be a factor responsible for the elevated levels of uric acid in the blood stream. Elevated levels may also lead to deposition of uric acid crystals in joints, tendons and surrounding tissues"

So guys slow down on your cola drink consumption.  When you have high uric acid level or goes up, you know the answer.

It can be caused also by high level of alcohol or beer intake

Gout Triggers, Risk Factors and Effects of Beer and Other Alcohol

Gout Risk Factors

Gout is associated with several other disorders, including high blood pressure and heart disease. It is important to receive prompt diagnosis, and to manage these conditions. Adopting lifestyle and diet changes, as well as revisiting any medications you are taking for other disorders, can make a significant difference in patients with milder cases of gout.
The following are cumulative risk factors for gout:
  • Obesity – defined as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Click here to calculate your BMI.
  • Untreated high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
  • High levels of serum triglycerides in the blood, which are associated with an increased risk of heart disease
  • Joint injury – urate crystals are more likely to form in a joint that was previously damaged and/or a recent injury can bring on a gout attack
  • Diuretics – when taken by people with high blood pressure, leg swelling or heart failure, diuretics can decrease the kidney’s ability to remove uric acid and result in hyperuricemia
  • Chemotherapy – the breakdown and turnover of cells leads to an increase in uric acid
  • Kidney disease – when the kidneys are not working as a filter at 100 percent capacity, they cannot remove enough excess uric acid, leading to hyperuricemia
  • Genetics – fact: one out of four people with gout have a family history of the condition
  • Hyperuricemia – elevated uric acid levels can cause gout to flare up
  • Cyclosporine – Taking this anti-rejection transplant medication
  • High fructose intake

Gout Triggers

Gout triggers are usually different from one person to another. Many patients find their gout easier to manage once they determine their specific triggers. Keeping a lifestyle diary may help you determine what foods, beverages or activities can cause your gout to flare.
Certain uric acid lowering medications can also cause gout to flare initially. It is important to ask your doctor about this side effect, and to continue taking the medication as directed through the flare.
  • Regular, excessive alcohol intake, especially beer or binge drinking
  • Surgery or a sudden, severe illness for which you are bedridden
  • Consuming large quantities of purine-rich foods, especially red meat, organ meat and shellfish
  • Radiation therapy
  • Crash diets, especially high-protein fad diets
  • A diet high in fructose, including soft drinks and fruit juices
  • Starting a uric acid-lowering treatment medicine (even though it may be the correct long-term therapy)

Gout and Alcohol

Regular, excessive alcohol intake, especially beer or binge drinking, may cause gout to flare up.

High Uric Acid Levels Can Lead to Heart Attack -

High uric acid levels can cause gout and heart diseases.

High uric acid levels (hyperurecemia) is often associated with gout.  The uric acid  can form into crystals which are needle sharp and can injure the adjoining tissues.  High uric acid level can come from eating diet rich in purines namely protein rich food like beans, meat, "chicharong bulaklak} fish, mushrooms, and even alcohol. Proteins break down into purine.  Most anti hyperurecemic agent blocks the enzymes that cause the purines to become uric acid (like allopurinol)

On the positive side, uric acid is a powerful anti oxidant

But high uric acid does not cause gouty arthritis only, but also cardio vascular diseases.  Why?  The uric acid crystals can block the blood vessel passageways, causing constriction and high blood pressure.

1/2 cup of cherries a day drive gout attacks away

Live healthy and long

From Dr. Mercola archives.

Did you know that 1/2 cup cherries a day, or equivalent of 12 cherries, reduce the risk of gouty arthiritis attack by 30%.

What is the primary cause of gout in the modern society - purines from protein?  No its mostly from fructose  (or HFCS)  from softdrinks and fruit juices in the market.  There are fruits with less fructose such as strawberries and blackberries.  Grapes, oranges, pineapple have high fructose content.

Also drink plenty of pure water to wash away uric acid.

Cherries, low fructose fruits, pure water, keep gout away

Gouty arthritis from Dr. Mercola

Gouty arthritis from Dr. Mercola

Gouty arthritis is supposed to be disease of the rich. Between 2 to 5 million Americans are afflicted by gout.  It is characterized by painful condition usually characterized by painful joints and toes, arising from elevated uric acid levels known as hyper uricimia.  The painful attack subsides in 3 to 10 days.

Uric acid comes from breakdown of amino acid and can be harmlessly passed by the kidney into the urine.

Hyperuricemia usually accompanies the following conditions:

l.  Diabetes

2.  High blood pressure

3.  Kidney disease

4.  Cancer treatment (in chemotherapy, there is high breakdown of cancer cells and the normal cells being destroyed by cancer cells result in high amino acid, protein breakdown)

SOME ADVICE:

1.  Maintain ideal body weight  (half of gout sufferers are overweight)

2.  Exercise (as detailman of allopurinol, I know for a fact that uric level can be reduced by 30% on exercise alone)

3.  Maintain a low purine diet

4.  Lower uric acid by cherries and strawberry diet (rich in antioxidants)

5.  0 alcohol intake

6. Avoid sweet drinks or drinks with High Fructose Corn Syrup  (studies show that those who take HFCS had 85% higher risk of gout)

Above all avoid the mainstream gout medicines as colchines, allopurinol, ibuprofen, NSAI, coricosterioids (cause hormonal imbalance) as they could have nasty side effect. You can treat gout naturally --> read further
