Top 3 Supplements you need most
Top 3 Supplements You Need the Most
What are the top 3 supplements that your body needs most? They are calcium, Vitamin D, and Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil.
Here is the latest post from Newsmax Health on the said article. (Dr. Mercola harps on this very often. Omega 3 is his favorite)
1. Vitamin D “is the most common nutrient deficiency in America today,” says Steven Masley, M.D., author of The 30-Day Heart Tune-up. Vitamin D is created in our body when sunshine hits our skin. However, most of us spend our days indoors. “We spend far less time outdoors than our ancestors did,” says Dr. Masley. “Every cell in your body needs vitamin D to function at its best.” Deficiencies are responsible for high blood pressure, increased risk of heart attacks, and strokes, says the Tampa-based physician.
Low vitamin D is also associated with loss of bone density, increased risk of cancer, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. In England, there was a recent surge in rickets, a childhood bone disease caused by lack of vitamin D. “Since it is difficult to get enough of this vitamin from food,” says Dr. Masley, “you need to get plenty of sunshine, but without letting yourself get burned.”
Bottom line: Take a vitamin D supplement with 2,000 IUs daily.

2. Calcium. Although Americans eat a lot of calcium-rich foods, including dairy products, we tend to be deficient because our modern diets are too acidic, which reduces the amount of the mineral in our bodies, says nutritionist J.J. Virgin, author of The Virgin Diet Cookbook. She says that beyond protecting bone health, calcium has a calming effect on the nervous system. It’s found in dairy foods, green vegetables and salmon.
Bottom line: Take a 500-mg calcium supplement daily.
3. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation that leads to heart disease and cancer. There are three types: EPA and DHA, which you find in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, and ALA which you get in vegetable oils and walnuts. “Ideally you should be eating three to four servings of wild, cold-water seafood each week,” says Virgin.
Bottom line: Take 2 grams of a high-quality fish oil supplement daily.

Those who ate fish rich in Omega 3 fatty acid less likely to have arthritis
Live healthy and long

Repost from Newsmax Health | by Nick Tate |August 13, 2013
Studies have shown that eating four servings of lean fish a week, and one serving of one fatty fish a week for ten years lessen the risk of having rheumatoid arthritis. This study was published in Annals of Rheumatic Disease
The anti rheumatoid property could be the long chain of Omega 3 PUFA. (polyunsaturated fatty acid). Omega 3 is a well known anti oxidant anti inflammatory
The research was conducted in Stockholm Sweden at Karolinska Institute involving 32, 000 women whose dietary habits were observed. This was part of Swedish Mammography Cohort Study

Fish oil containing found in salmon and trout are effective in combatting squamous cancer cells found in mouth, throat, and skin. This was the finding in Queen Mary Hospital in London. Dr. Zacharoula Nikolakopolou, MD made this discovery while studying at the said hospital. Large therapeutic doses are needed to treat cancer and the body does not have the means to sythesize Omega 3 fatty acid. Supplements from diet and nutrition are needed.
Kenneth Parkinson head of Oral Cancer Research Group at Queen Mary's Institute of Dentistry, that omega 3 fatty acid in therapeutic dose selectively targetted the cancer cells without affecting the normal cells (which is not possible with other cancer treatment)
Little research has been done on oral cancer or action of omega 3 on normal cells

Not all men diagnosed with prostate cancer die from the disease.
More Evidence Not All Prostate Cancers Need Treatment
Repost from Newsmax Health | July 22, 2013
In a study of men who died of other causes, almost half of them prostate tumors. Meaning to say that those with prostate tumors die with the tumor not because of the tumor.
Lead author Dr. Alexander Zlotta, director of Uro - Oncology at Mt. Sinai hospital made this conclusion. He and his colleagues examined 300 men who died, but not from prostate cancer; 220 men in Russia and l00 men in Japan.
They found out that fewer men in Russia and Japan died from prostate cancer, although the disease is present at same proportion as in USA.
In USA, 239,000 men will be diagnosed to have prostate cancer, but only 39,000 will die from it, according to American Cancer Society.
The % of a man being diagnosed with prostate cancer is 17% but his risk of dying is 3.4 %. Cancer will not spread as fast as other diseases, and the patient may die from other causes and other types of tumor.
The idea is to find out which tumors are more deadly rather than finding in general the patient has prostate tumor
Top Doc: Most Men Die With Prostate Cancer — Not From It
Repost from Newsmax health email newsletter
Please take note that prostate cancer is not cause of death of elder men. They die with it. This is according to a top urologist Dr. David Samadi of Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York
Top Doc: Most Men Die With Prostate
Cancer — Not From It A recent study of 300 men over 60 who had died of causes other than prostate cancer found that half of them had tumors in their prostate glands, a finding that doesn't surprise Dr. David Samadi, vice chairman of the Department of Urology and chief of Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
"If every 80-year-old man that walks into my office right now — if we biopsied every one of them — half of those guys are going to have prostate cancer, but it's the type of prostate cancer that's slow-growing cancer and not going to hurt them," he tells "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax.com.
Editor's Notes:
ALERT: 5 Warning Signs of Prostate Cancer. How Many Do You Have?
The One Thing You Should Do For Your Prostate Every Morning
"Ten minutes ago I saw a gentleman — 42-year-old — with prostate cancer," he continued. "He has 30 years ahead of him, so case by case, different patients, different type of prostate cancers have to be treated different. When you get to the age of 75 or 80, we're not going to be very aggressive because you will die with that cancer but not from it."
Doctors have long struggled with trying not to overtreat slow-growing prostate cancer, which can lead to incontinence and impotence, and undertreat more aggressive malignancies. Current screening methods — the prostate-specific antigen blood test, digital rectal exams, and prostate biopsies — cannot necessarily differentiate between those cancers that will kill and those that will be slow-growing and non-life-threatening.
According to Dr. Samadi, that is where age can play a role.
"The big message is not every prostate cancer is the same," he says. "Some are slow-growing, some are more aggressive. So we got to take it patient by patient. But in general, once you pass over the age of 75 … you're not going to die from this."
In the United States, 230,000 men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, but fewer than 30,000 will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society.
Authors of the study of prostate cancer and older men, which was published this month in the Journal of the National Institute of Cancer, put overall lifetime risk of prostate cancer for men at 17 percent and risk of dying from the disease at 3.4 percent.
Dr. Samadi emphasized the need for men to have annual PSA tests and digital rectal exams and to have regular conversations with their doctors about their individual risk.

Are taller women at greater risk with cancer? (causal or just a correlation?) .
Tall Women Face Greater Cancer Risk: Study
Repost from Newsmax health July 25, 2013
Are taller women more prone to cancer. A recent study would seem to suggest so. ("The taller they are....)
This seems to be the correlation, more so than obesity and this covers all types of cancer from thyroid to melanoma. The study involved subjects; women aged 50 to 79, numbering l45,000 for 12 years and 20, 928 of them developed cancer. The subjects were participant in a 15 year study conducted by National Health Institute for Women's Health Initiative.
On the average, the subject had 38.2% risk of developing cancer in their lifetime.
About height correlation:
For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) the risk of developing cancer;
For cancer of the kidney, rectum, thyroid, or blood, the risk increased (doubled) to 23 to 29%
The study was conducted by Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yashiva University in New York and the lead researcher was Geoffrey Kabat.
The explanation may be that: tall girls had special nutrition during their growth period and milk and hormones may increase the risk of the abnormality of cell growth. Or that the greater body mass and area exposes their body to risk factors/carcinogens.
So tall girls better have yourself examined regularly for cancer (this is a precaution, not a scary post) And this is based on a study.

Six ways to lower blood pressure fast - the natural cheap way
Live healthy and long
Repost from Hang the Bankers by Clark Kent (?) Jan 2013
High blood pressure is a silent killer and millions are suffering from this due to lifestyle (diet, lack of exercise and stress) High blood pressure can lead to CVA (stroke) or heart attack. It has been found that even the young have high bp. More than l/3 of people aged 16 to 34 have hypertension.
High bp leads to brain damage and premature aging.
There are natural ways of reducing high bp fast without resorting to pharma drugs that can be toxic or cause certain disability. The common approach is via the angiotensin/renin route. Anti high bp drugs are angiotensin receptor blockers (which are carcinogenic) These are: almonds, coconut water, cayenne peppers, raw cacao, turmeric (yellow ginger) and garlic. (And also okra) I have made write ups on this at this site on chili pepper, turmeric, garlic. It would help if I post additional information.
More information from Hang the bankers
1. Raw almonds - they are expensive though and must be imported from US where they are grown. Almond reduce inflammation in blood vessels which are usual cause of vaso constriction and high bp, lowers weight, and lowers cholesterol level which ultimately leads to low bp. It is a superfood. It is slow acting though and for long term use (watch out for uric acid though?)
2. Cayenne pepper - undoubtedly the fastest acting (acts within 30 minutes after taking) It is a powerful blood thinner and vasodilator. Mix one to two teaspoon of cayenne pepper with aloe vera and honey in tea concoction. There are capsule preparation if you cant stand the spicy taste of pepper.
3 Coconut water (buko juice) is rich in potassium and thus helps reduce high blood presssure.
4. Raw cacao - the flavinoids of raw cacao are adaptogens which allow body to adopt stresss better (which are often cause of high bp) . They help regulate stress hormones through out the body.
Raw cacao can result in blood pressure reduction by as much as 4.7/2.8 mm upon taking. Quite impressive!
5. Turmeric - yellow ginger. It is a powerful blood thinner. As part of the diet of Indians, it helps prevent hypertension among them. It also lessens inflammation and helps in dilating blood vessels.
6 Garlic - from a recent Newsmax health post has been shown to reduce triglyceride level by 17% and blood pressure by as much as 12%. A compound in garlic called hydrogen sulfide smoothens and relax blood vessels thus reducing bp. It also prevents plaque build up. A study in Tagore Medical School in India showed that those who took garlic oil were 83% less likely to develop blood clots

High Arsenic in Rice causes genetic damange
Live healthy and long
From Newsmax Health by Nick Tate | July 23, 2013
Researchers from Manchester and CSIR - Indian Institute of Chemical Biology in Kolkata has linked the high arsenic in rice and chromosomal damage. Thus people who plenty of rice are at risk. There are naturally occurring arsenic and those coming from insecticides and fertilizer and this is the cause for concern.
This findings will help regulators control the arsenic in rice especially in regions of the world where rice is staple food, ie,about 50% of their diet consist of rice.
Is there arsenic in PHL rice?

Penn State Researchers - Cocoa controls blood sugar
Live healthy and long
From Newsmax Health by Nick Tate | June 13, 2013
Researchers found out that few cups of cocoa help people control diabetes and other form of inflammation related diseases. This was tested in mice. (Not yet in people)
Experiments showed that feeding the mice 10 tablespoons of sugar (equivalent of 5 cups of cocoa) in a l0 week period showed the effects on reduction of disease and inflammation to be equivalent of those eating non fatty diet. The triglycirides in the liver was reduced by 32% (the effect is significant)
Most researchers tend to stay away from chocolate because it is high in fat and sugar. However, cocoa is low in fat and low in sugar and contains plenty of polyphenolic compounds which is linked to great health benefits just like in wine and tea.

Health benefits of eating chocolate
Live healthy and long
Repost from Newsmaxhealth | Feb 2013
For those who still feel guilty about eating chocolates, and although chocolate is associated with Valentine, eating chocolate, especially the dark ones has very clear health benefits: (mainly because of anti oxidants that it contain)
Cardiovascular diseases. Various studies have shown the beneficial effect of chocolate vs CVD:
-in Germany, an 8 year study involving 20,000 subject showed that eating 2 oz of chocolate per day, decreased risk of stroke and heart attacks by 39%. Wow.
-in Australia, those women aged over 70% who ate chocolates were 60% less likely to die from heart attacks.
Chocolates were thought to have blood thinning properties.
Dementia. American Heart Association journal Hypertension said that drinking cocoa flavored flavonol for 8 weeks showed improvement in memory.
Obesity. It is said to be a lazy man's exercise. Eating chocolate, while it increases caloric intake caused decrease in weight
Diabetes. Flavinoids in cocoa decreases insulin resistance enabling the body to metabolize glucose effectively thus decreasing demand for insulin
Depression. Chocolate contains PEA (phenethylamine) the same compound when your brain releases when you fall in love. triggering release of endorphins, the feel good hormone. It also contains anadamine which stimulates the receptors in brain as marijuana.
Early death. Those who ate chocolate lived longer for a year than those who did not.
Chocolate is also good for cough and migraine.
Chocolate anyone?

Deep fried foods tied to prostate cancer (and other cancer types)
Live healthy and long
Repost from Newsmax health January 2013
High consumption of deep fried food: meat, french fries, chicken are related to high incidence of prostate cancer. Repeated use of oil for deep frying are related to higher risk. The results of the study was published in journal The Prostate and involved a study of l,500 men aged 35 to 74
High temperature frying can lead to the formation of compounds that are carcinogenic.
Previous studies have linked deep fried foods to various cancer: breast, pancreas, head and neck, and esophagus.
So dear fellowmen, if you wish to avoid prostate cancer, avoid your fries: chicken and french. They are the most popular food in the fast food market

Resting pulse rate a predictor of longevity?
Live healthy and long
From Newsmax Health | April 16, 2013
Do patients with higher resting pulse rate die earlier than those who have lower resting heart rate?
Yes.
This was the finding of Dr. Magnus Thorsten Jensen, a cardiologist at Copenhagen University Hospital Gentofte. In their observation, those with resting of 80 HR will die five years earlier than those with HR of 65. (How old can I get? My HR is between 53 and 55)
The study covered 2,800 men, starting when they were middle aged since 1970 and were observed for 16 years.
Generally, it was observed that 10 beats per minute increase in HR can lead to 16% increase in death rate.
How can you lower HR:
l. Stop smoking
2. Increasing physical activity (exercise)
3. Decreasing periods of sitting
Medications of course help.
The target HR proposed by medical association should be adjusted lowered in the light of this finding
