Live healthy and long
A news item came in the PDI regarding diabetes as growing health concern in the Philippines and the world. One in 25 Filipinos has diabetes and is now the 8th cause of death in the country. (From 3.4% to $.8%
Today I visited my daughter who requested for hospitalizat-on because she felt bad. Her blood sugar is high (due to work at night and constant sitting at the office, lack of exercise, and smoking - caused by poor lifestyle)
About 400 million are affected by diabetes worldwide and the number is expected to reach 600 million by 2035
Some facts about diabetes
1. Diabetes is predicted to be the 7th cause of death worldwide by 2030
2. There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1 - lack of production of insulin by the body
Type 2 - results from the body's ineffective use of insulin,
3. There is 3rd type of diabetes - gestational diabetes experienced by pregnant women resulting in hyperglycemia (the symptoms, or the diabetes disappear after pregnancy?)
4. Type 2 diabetes (which is a result of lifestyle) is more common than type 1 diabetes.
5. 50-80% deaths in diabetic patients are from cardiovascular diabetes
6. 80% of deaths from diabetes occur in low and middle income countries, with ages of 35 and 64
7, Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, amputation and kidney failure. (Some of my uncles had amputation, one of my cousins is legally blind, and my mother suffered from kidney failure
8, Type 2 diabtes can be vented by sensible diet and exercise ( I have diabetes for the last 20 years and thanks the Lord I am still alive and strong. I have been biking hard and regularly for the last 5 years.
HOW TO REDUCE RISK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES
1. Have water instead of sweetened or cola drinks for refreshment.
2. Have 3 servings of fruits three times a day;
3. Choose nuts, fruits, sugar free yoghurt for snack;
4. Choose whole grain wheat bread instead of white bread
5 Get more sleep (not possible with outsourcing, call centers workers)
6. Stop smoking
7. Choose grilled over fried (avoid Maxs, KFC, Jollibee, Mcdo and instead go for barbecue, isaw.... etc...
