Diabetes - a growing health concern in the Philippines and in the world

Live healthy and long

A news item came in the PDI regarding diabetes as growing health concern in the Philippines and the world.  One in 25 Filipinos has diabetes and is now the 8th cause of death in the country. (From 3.4% to $.8%

Today I visited my daughter who requested for hospitalizat-on because she felt bad.  Her blood sugar is high  (due to work at night and constant sitting at the office, lack of exercise, and smoking -  caused by poor lifestyle)

About 400 million are affected by diabetes worldwide and the number is expected to reach 600 million by 2035

Some facts about diabetes

1.  Diabetes is predicted to be the 7th cause of death worldwide by 2030

2.  There are two types of diabetes:

Type 1 -  lack of production of insulin by the body

Type 2 - results from the body's ineffective use of insulin,

3.  There is 3rd type of diabetes - gestational diabetes experienced by pregnant women resulting in hyperglycemia  (the symptoms, or the diabetes disappear after pregnancy?)

Reversing Diabetes Naturally

Can you reverse diabetes naturally.  Yes! according to these articles

Reversing diabetes in 30 days or less

From Dr. Joseph Mercola remission of diabetes possible with diet and exercise

  • Severely limit or eliminate sugar and grains in your diet, especially fructose which is far more detrimental than any other type of sugar. Following my Nutrition Plan will help you do this without too much fuss.
  • Exercise regularly. Exercise is an absolutely essential factor, and without it, you're unlikely to get this devastating disease under control. It is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to lower your insulin and leptin resistance. If you're unsure of how to get started, I recommend reviewing my Peak Fitness program for tips and guidelines.
  • Avoid trans fats.
  • Get plenty of omega-3 fats from a high quality, animal-based source, such as krill oil.
  • Optimize your vitamin D levels. Recent studies have revealed that getting enough vitamin D can have a powerful effect on normalizing your blood pressure and that low vitamin D levels may increase your risk of heart disease.
  • Optimize your gut flora. Your gut is a living ecosystem, full of both good bacteria and bad. Multiple studies have shown that obese people have different intestinal bacteria than lean people. The more good bacteria you have, the stronger your immune system will be and the better your body will function overall. Fortunately, optimizing your gut flora is relatively easy. You can reseed your body with good bacteria by eating fermented foods (such as fermented vegetables, natto, raw organic cheese, or raw milk kefir) or by taking a high-quality probiotic supplement.
  • Address any underlying emotional issues and/or stress. Non-invasive tools like the Emotional Freedom Technique can be helpful and effective.
  • Get enough high-quality sleep every night.
  • Monitor your fasting insulin level. This is every bit as important as your fasting blood sugar. You'll want your fasting insulin level to be between 2 and 4. The higher your level, the worse your insulin sensitivity is.

Re Diabetes cures

Regarding the "diabetes" of child

1.  It does not look as bad as was pointed by Dr. Z.  Dr. Zs regimen and approach has been different since Tita  died.  It is all drugs about symptomatic treatment  ie to remove sugar.  My bs was 6.7  and I am alive up to now.  There has to be some sensible way to survive. Dr. Zs dictum before was wellness:

    1. Maintain IBW
    2.  Exercise
    3.  Diet and nutrition  (primal diet)
    4.  Monitor BS with a good glucometer
    4.  Avoid toxic foods:

        1.  apat ang paa
        2.  salt
        3.  sugar
        4 fatty food

         1.  Food with aspartame and HFCS
         2.   Fast food (that are oily etc)
         3.  softdrinks even noodles and 3 in one coffee

2  Diabetes is not a disease but a metabolic disorder resulting from body's inability to metabolize sugar for use of the body.  Too little sugar is worse than having too much

When there is a diabetes, blood sugar spikes and declines too low (and hypoglycemia results)

    Antidote:

    1.  Graze  - avoid large meals but eat small quantity of food every 2 hours

    2. Fight off hypo with a teaspoon of brown sugar, or milo, or with ordinary coke (1/2 glass)

3.  Diabetes is a lifestyle disease resulting from:

    1.  Sedentary living that results in
    2.  Obesity
    3. Stress
    4.  Lack of sleep

About 1/3 of the world is obese;  obesity leads to diabetes.  Less is more

Solution:

1. Avoid stressful job,
2.  Lessen weight
3.  Exercise
4.  Have plenty of rest .  Sleep early

Diabetes being monitored through Breathalyzer without Needles!

Diabetes Breathalyzer Tracks Blood Sugar Without Needles

From Newsmax Health by Nick Tate | November 13, 2013

From Health Day - Diabetes Information

From Q Med

The first breathalyzer that tracks blood sugar, has been introduced to the public in American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. meeting in San Antonio Texas. It uses nanotechnology that tracks traces of acetone in the breath, which is associated with diabetes.   The current device is about the size of a book and needs further testing before it can be introduced to the public.  There are about 350 million diabetics worldwide who would benefit from the product, ie they do not have to be pricked.

But it needs more testing and calibration.  But one of the things I dislike in being a diabetic is the painful finger pricking.  So I like the system where your thighs and arms are instead pricked and tiny blood amount is used

From Health Day - the full article:

Needle-Free 'Breathalyzer' for Daily Diabetes Testing Shows Promise

But first, device must undergo clinical studies

By
HealthDay Reporter
WEDNESDAY, Nov. 13, 2013 (HealthDay News) -- People with diabetes have to prick their fingers multiple times a day to monitor their blood sugar levels, but researchers report that someday patients may be able to do that simply by checking their breath.
A hand-held device would measure levels of the chemical acetone in someone's breath. Acetone levels rise when blood sugar levels rise, and acetone is responsible for the sweet, fruity smell on the breath of people with diabetes who have high blood sugar levels.
What hasn't yet been proven is whether or not blood sugar levels reliably rise and fall with acetone levels, according to the study's lead researcher, Ronny Priefer, a professor of medicinal chemistry at Western New England University in Springfield, Mass.
"If we can successfully show that there is a linear correlation between acetone levels and blood glucose [sugar] levels, the ease of which an individual with diabetes can monitor their disease state should be dramatically simplified," Priefer said.
He added that a simple breath test to measure blood sugar levels might help patients better manage their disease, too, because it won't hurt like a finger prick to get the information needed to guide treatment decisions.
Results of the study were scheduled to be presented Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, held in San Antonio, Texas.
People with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes have to measure their blood sugar levels to monitor how well treatments are working. Blood sugar checks are especially important for people with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that always requires treatment with insulin. People with type 1 diabetes may check their blood sugar levels as many as six or more times a day, according to JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
People with type 2 diabetes who use insulin also need to check their blood sugar levels more frequently than those who don't use insulin. For those dependent on insulin, a blood sugar check tells them whether or not they need more insulin, and helps guide the decision on how much insulin is needed.
Priefer and his colleagues developed a hand-held device that uses layers of a film that react with acetone to quantify the amount of acetone present in breath samples.
Right now, the breathalyzer is about the size of a book. The researchers are working to make the device smaller, so that it's similar to what's used by the police to measure blood alcohol levels. Priefer said that would make it about the size of a large coffee mug.
He said they have two clinical trials planned for 2014 to see if the levels of acetone go up linearly with a rise in blood sugar levels.
Priefer said he expects that the researchers will find that certain foods may affect the readings. And, of course, the presence of acetone in the environment would affect readings. So, if someone had just removed nail polish with an acetone-based remover, that would affect the readings.
"The ultimate goal is to replace the finger prick," he said. However, he said it remains to be seen whether the blood sugar measurements will be accurate enough to guide insulin dosing, or if the technology might just be useful for people with type 2 diabetes who don't use insulin.
One diabetes expert said he was glad to see treatment innovations but didn't think this one would be appropriate for all patients.
"I'm happy to learn that there are novel things in technology in development. But, the relationship between acetone and blood sugar isn't always one to one," said Dr. Joel Zonszein, director of the clinical diabetes center at Montefiore Medical Center, in New York City.
"People can have high blood sugars with low acetone, and low blood sugars with high acetone," Zonszein said. "I don't think acetone will be a good way of managing blood sugars, at least not for people with type 1 diabetes, where they really need very precise numbers to know how much insulin to give. It may be a help for people with type 2 diabetes, who aren't taking insulin."

Live healthy and long

Repost from Newsmax Health by Sylvia Booth Hubbard  | July 26, 2013

Garlic, a common household spice, has been found by National Institute of Health to be able to reduce risk of certain cancer by 50%  -  breast, prostate, skin, stomach, bladder, and even colorectal cancer.  Some even suggest that its effectiveness in cancer prevention could be as much as 2/3! (for colorectal cancer)

Garlic which has been used as medicine since the time of Egyptians is also useful in prevention of heart disease and diabetes.  The Food Pharmacy book by Jean Carper discusses its various uses in depth

Certain organic sulfur compound in garlic (Diallyl Trisulfide) DATS inhibit growth and spread of cancer cells.

Garlic is found to be effective also in:

Low testosterone level - its use for a month can increase testosterone level

Why half of US population may have impaired brain function by 2030

Live healthy and long

From Dr. Mercola: why half of US population will be stupid by 2030

The cause?   Too much sugar in their diet.

A study of rats being fed with fructose sugar was made and the rats lost their ability to find their way through the maze.  Much of the diet of Americans:  in cakes, candies, softdrinks are laced with HFCS.  And this the cause of obesity and  diabetes. and..... diminished brain function.   Increase rate of stupidity in future generation.

Several steps may be taken:

l.  Do not buy junk foods;

2.  Do not support junk food;

3.  Tax junk foods. Read more

Is Coffee Good for Health?

Effective Cures Can be Cheap

When I was in my my 20's news has it that coffee is deadly together with cigarette and whisky.  Twenty years ago, the song changed (as is with eggs) and the news is coffee with its phytonutrients is good for health.  Again the book of  Jean Carper, " the food pharmacy" enumerates the benefits of coffee.( pp 169 - 177)

I saw in Save More this ad what the chapter in Carper's book say about coffee:

The ads says:

> coffee reduces the risk of heart disease,
> reduces the risk of diabetes (up to 60%
> reduces he risk of dementia up to 65%
>  reduces the risk of colon cancer by 25%
>  reduces risk of cirrhosis by 80%
>  risk of gallstones by almost 50%
>  risk of Parkinson disease by 80%
>   good for head ache relief
>   for asthma relief
>   for cavity protection

Wow and only Php 5 per dose?   Wow, that is cheap. Php 5 can prolong your life.  Go for it rather than PHP 25 for your load daily.

Give us this day our daily coffee....

Tomato juice helps prevent heart disease - especially for type 2
diabetes (who have high risk of heart attack). This is a result
of a study published in  Journal of the American Medical
Association. Group of people were given 250ml of tomato juice
daily. The amount of platelet aggregation (a great indicator of
heart attack risk) decreased whooping 27% in only three weeks.
