Did the instant noodles that we included in the dog food kill our 2 dogs?

Live healthy and long

We keep plenty of dogs to keep robbers at bay.  We used to have 6;  now we just have 4 because 2 died in quick succession.  One died last Friday for no apparent reasons; and the other one last night.  We suspected that our neighbor could have possibly poisoned our dog because he said he was poisoning the rats roaming the area.

But it dawned to me that we were flavoring the rice food of the dog with instant noodles.  And the articles on instant noodles says:

1.  It is high on sodium (about 1,000 mg)

2.  It has wax to prevent the noodles from clinging to one another.

3.  And high MSG content.

Is it the sodium or the MSG that killed our dog?

Does MSG kill dogs/cats?

Benefits of candy (mostly chocolate) for health - anti stroke, heart atttack, cancer!

Live healthy and long

Repost from Newsmax health   by Sylvia Booth Hubbard  | August 11, 2013

Some candies are said to be harmful to health;  they cause early tooth decay, and furobacteria which could be bad for the health.  But two candies, dark chocolate and peppermint have plenty of health benefits:

1.  Reduced risk of heart attack and stroke.  Eating dark chocolate regularly according to British Medical Journal reduced risk of stroke by 49% and heart attack by 39%.  This is because of the flavonoids in dark chocolate;

2. Anti depressant - chocolate contains both serotonin and phenylethylethiamine (PEA) that both enhance mood.

3.  Longevity  - a study by Harvard School of Public Health found out that those who ate candies (chocolate) several times a month, lived a year longer than those who did not.  This could be due to the phenol, found also in  red wine.  The scientist speculated that phenol reduced the oxidation of low density cholesterol lipoprotein,  and enhance immune function

Diabetes  -  chocolate  increased the level of HDL (good cholesterol) called glabridin in diabetic patients. Thus it is suggested by researcher Steve Atkin of University of Hull, that chocolate should be part of sensible diet of diabetic.   Flavonoids in licorice, it was found out,  reversed learning and memory problems of diabetic patient.

5.  Coughing - chocolate contains theobromine that calms down vagus nerve.  It can be better than codeine in controlling cough.

6.  Cancer -  researchers of affiliate (Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center) of Georgetown University Medical center found chocolate to be good in controlling cancer.  A compound in cocoa beans, known as GECGC was found to be most effective in fast growing cancer of colon, cervical and leukemia, and at doses one eats.

Studies have shown that eating  four servings of lean fish  a week, and one serving of one fatty fish a week for ten years lessen the risk of having rheumatoid arthritis.  This study was published  in Annals of Rheumatic Disease

The anti rheumatoid property could be the long chain of Omega 3  PUFA.  (polyunsaturated fatty acid).  Omega 3 is a well known anti oxidant anti inflammatory

The research was conducted in Stockholm Sweden  at Karolinska Institute involving 32, 000 women whose dietary habits were observed.  This was part of Swedish Mammography Cohort Study

Fwd: Christmas Just Came Early for Couch Potatoes - Transmission #63

Rev Erbaa could be the answer to the problem of many citizens who eat too much, are lethargic and do not want to exercise.

It melts sugar and fat in the liver, hence less fat production in the body, no obesity.  In the TV shows that I see, like Man Vs. Food, many citizens eat too much fatty, rich delicious food.

There is no way by which obesity can be controlled. Rev Erbaa could be the cure.  Eat and splurge all you want;  Rev Erbaa could take care of the rest?

Christmas Just Came Early for Couch Potatoes
By MARTY BIANCUZZO, Chief Technology Analyst

Each year, roughly $147 billion gets stuffed down the healthcare industry's throat, due to something that's now officially classed as a "disease."

Obesity.

What's more... that figure has more than doubled over the last decade. It seems the national waistline is expanding faster than ever.

However, scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) are in the early stages of developing a solution to the obesity problem.

Now, I know what you're thinking...

No, it's not a new fad diet. You don't have to eliminate carbs while only eating seeds.

It's not the latest installment of P90X, either. (Believe it or not, you don't even have to set foot in a gym.)

It's actually a pill you can pop in the comfort of your own home.

The "miracle pill" that Americans have been waiting and longing for...

From Mice to Men

In his lab at TSRI, Professor Thomas Burris has finished developing two chemical compounds.

One of them is beyond significant...

It's called SR9009. And it's getting closer to becoming every couch potato's dream come true.

You see, Burris has discovered that SR9009 wildly reduces obesity in the mice he's been testing.

How?

By fusing and triggering Rev-ErbAa strands.

Don't worry... we're not going back to biology class here.

All you need to know about Rev-ErbAa is this...

  • It's an extremely influential protein in metabolic functionality.
  • It melts fat and sugar in the liver.
  • It prevents overproduction of fat cells in the body.
  • And it keeps the body's inflammatory response under control.
Now, if you're thinking that this is another over-hyped diet pill in the making, I guarantee you, it's not.

In primary trials, SR9009 has shown that it's nothing like this whatsoever...

What are the 7 poisonous drugs that the govt wants the masses to take?

Live healthy and long

Repost from Health Science Institute

These are the 7 drugs that the govt has approved for consumption of the general public but could be poisonous. Statins contribute to memory loss and risk of diabetes.  Celebrex can cause heart attack. Those who take sleeping pills are 5x more prone to die than those who dont.

Some anti diabetic drug has been linked to bladder cancer and heart failure

Anti cancer drugs are known for serious side effects:   baldness, vomitting, loss of appetite, and destruction of healthy cells.

There are some alternatives that HSI point out:

DBX 13 for weight loss and lowering of cholesterol, a sugar escort, twice as effective vs pharma anti diabetic drug

H-86 as new anti cancer treatment without serious side effect

Omega 3 fatty acids in fish stops cancer growth

Live healthy and long

Repost from Newsmax health | August 2, 2013

Fish oil containing found in salmon and trout are effective in combatting squamous cancer cells found in mouth, throat, and skin.  This was the finding in Queen Mary Hospital  in London.  Dr. Zacharoula Nikolakopolou, MD made this discovery while studying at the said hospital.   Large therapeutic doses are needed to treat cancer and the body does not have the means to sythesize Omega 3 fatty acid.  Supplements from diet and nutrition are needed.

Kenneth Parkinson head of Oral Cancer Research Group at Queen Mary's Institute of Dentistry, that omega 3 fatty acid in therapeutic dose selectively targetted the cancer cells without affecting the normal cells (which is not possible with other cancer treatment)

Little research has been done on oral cancer or action of omega 3 on normal cells

Anemia causes/linked to dementia?

Live healthy and long

Repost from Newsmax health | August 1, 2013

This seems to be an inconclusive report.  It says that women with anemia do not develop such symptoms.  (2,500 sample)  However for males, those who had anemia, 23% developed dementia, those who are not anemic, 17% developed dementia.  The study was made by Dr. Kristine Yaff of dept of psychiatry at University of California.  However, the risk of developing dementia remained at 50% after discounting after factors.

The relationship is due to the fact that RBC delivers oxygen and nutrients to the brain, and the brain consumes 70% of the oxygen and nutrients used by the body.

Life Saving Techniques you can do at home to determine your fitness

Live healthy and long

Repost from Newsmaxhealth | August 22, 2013

There are several tests, DIY you can do at home, to test your health:

l.  The knee jerk reflex. Cross your leg put one knee above the other and tap the tendon.  It should have a knee jerk reaction (what else)  if it does not, it is sign of hypothryrodism.   The thinning of outer eyebrow is also a sign of the same sickness;

2.  Put up your thigh and hold it up at 45 degree angle  for 2 minutes.  If one leg gets pale after 2 minutes, then there is a sign of blocked artery.

3.  Eat corn;  since corn's outer kernel does not get digested, it should be passed out intact.   It should pass out between 12 to 36 hours.  If it passes out longer, then see a gastroenterologist;  it is sign of irritable bowel or gastroenteritis/

4.  Check your pulse;  it should be regular.  Make your foot as metronome or timer.  See if the heartbeat and your foot synch.  If not see your cardiologist

Some startling facts:

1.  Exposure to this cause Type 2 diabetes (we learned from Health Cracker that these are phthlates and BPA from plastic and plastic containers)

2.  Blood donations make blood fresh and not prone to clotting and frees the individual from future heart attacks

Dr. Devi Prassad Shetty, named the Henry Ford of heart surgery by the Wall Street Journal

Live healthy and long

Repost from Sociovigil.in | January 3, 2013

Dr. Devi Passad Shetty who has done 15,000 heart surgeries, a cardiac surgeon and philantropist has been named the Henry Ford of heart surgery by the Wall St. Journal,  the Indian of the Year by CNN, and Phadna Bhusna award for medicine.

The cornerstone of his philantropy are:

1. economies of scale

2.  the micro health insurance Yeshawini.  For only 10 rupees a month, this micro insurance was launched for the farmers of Kamataka.  It is the cheapest health insurance scheme and benefitted 85,000 farmers from the free medical treatment.

3.  The health city: Narayana Hrudayalaya   a multi specialty hospital in one campus:    with cancer, heart, neurological, children's hospital, general hospital.  5000 bed hospital employing economies of scale.5,500 beds in l4 hospitals  located in  11 cities.  Patients are come in not only from India but from neighboring countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh  . There will be 6 new hospitals to be opened before the end of 2013 operating under the same business model:  quality care at low cost,

NH one of the innovative companies: Walmart of healthcare

Are there MDs like Dr.Devi Shetty of India in the PHL?

Live healthy and long

I must have made the mistake of teaching only opportunity seeking for   MD in MBA for Health in a leading GSB in Manila.  I should refocus my syllabus on making hospital care as social enterprise instead instead of molding them into the likes of tycoon.  We need to bring down health care cost in the PHL instead of following the opportunistic pricing/opportunity seeking model of business entrepreneurs as in US (as investigated by Steve Brill for Time Magazine)

We should go to the Doctor to the Barrio model (Dr. Flavier) or even hilots or herbolarios, to be strategic doctors, to use the herbs and food in distant barrio to cure the sick and the poor.

Or follow the Indian models:    Dr. V of the Aravind Hospital envisioned the hospital to be the McDonald of Eye Surgery.  They had operated on millions using operations management method.
and Dr Devi Shetty  of the Narayana Hrudayalaya (NH hospital)  He founded this in 2001 because his employer could not understand his vision.  Heart surgery in NH costs only the equivalent of $l,500 vs. $108,000 in US or $25,000 in the Phil. He also founded the Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences  (RTIICS

In Davao PHL, it is only $8,000.00  Dr. Shetty believes that costs can be reduced by as much as 50% in a decade by employing economies of scale Thus the costs in India can still go down to $800.00. That is something!

Can there be a philantropist Dr. like Dr. Shetty (most will think that that model is simply shit)?  Can we make health services:

1.  Be in the mold of social business; (the reverse of profit maximization business)

2.  Be operated in an efficient manner to bring down costs?

3.  Be compassionate.

There is no need to have medical tourism campaign if we give excellent medical care at very low costs.  Patients from Arab countries, US, UK, and South Africa visit NH and get quality care at low cost.

Why is health care cost so high in US, and also acting up in the PHL too?

Live healthy and long

Repost from Dr. Mercola archive | August 14, 2013

A heart surgery costs about $1 583 or 95,000 rupees (the Indian currency is on verge of devaluation so it could be even lower) in India and about ten times as much in USA, eg. Cleveland Clinic $106, 385.  Efforts are underway to reduce the price some more in India to about $800 within the decade to make the procedure to most of the Indians who live on less than $2 a day.  (There is the Aravind hospital in India which does a cataract surgery for only $5!!)  Everything could be reduced including supplies and drapes which could be a model for developing countries.

In the US though, every thing is about opportunistic pricing (maximizing because of health care system?) According to Dr. Devi Shetty

This gave rise to medical tourism and prices in other countries, even with the hotel and air travel are much lower than in the US.  Such countries include Thailand, Taiwan and India.  However such travel are risky because of superbugs in such countries, and other risks associated with travel.

Steven Brill of Time Magazine did an investigative piece on US health care cost which are sometimes shocking!  Costs/prices could be staggering. Profit motive, profit maximization.  Health care costs in US total are the health care costs of top ten countries after it;  yet longevity in US is at the tail end.

They also have many unnecessary procedures.

Health care should be more classified as a social business.  And the largest hospitals in the PHL, the big four, Makati Med, TMC, Cardinal, and St. Lukes (two are owned by MVP) are on profit maximization, opportunity pricing trajectory like US (vs the income levels of Filipinos)

If I were given longer life and have more business opportunities, I will have health care facilities patterned after India.

These two chemicals in plastic and plastic container lead to obesity and diabetes

Live healthy and long

Repost from Health Cracker | August 20, 2013

The original post mentioned a brand of plastic container (but it could apply to other brand of plastic containers).  But the most important part of the post is about the two chemicals present in such plastic containers and plastic wrappers:   exposure to this type of phthlate:   DEHP  (di-2-ethylhexyphthlate) led to insulin resistance in chidren aged 12 to 19 (meaning exposure to DEHP led to diabetes in children)  This was according to study of Dr. Leonardo Trasande  associate professor of pediatrics and environmental medicine of NYU school of medicine.

In another study by Dra.  Donna Eng of University of Michigan, the high level of BPA in children aged 6 to 18 found that children with high level of BPA had high body fat level as well.

Recommendation:

l.  Avoid plastic containers for school children "baon" especially those with recycling number 3, 6, 7 (according to Dr. Trasande)

2.  Use paper bags instead (or banana leaves)

3.  Do not microwave food in plastic containers even microwaveable ones.

Having more of this in your diet can lead to early death

Live healthy and long

Repost from Health Cracker | August 16, 2013

Giving in to your sweet tooth, and eating too much sweet food, or food with sugar can be toxic to you and increase your risk of dying by 50%.  A University of Utah (Jazz?) study showed that rats fed with 25% more sugar in their diet, or equivalent  of 500 calories. 35% of the female rats died during the experiment.  (whereas only 17% died from natural causes)

The male rodents on the other hand did not suffer from the same fate but lost the ability to reproduce.

So what is the advice:  cut on sugary foods and drinks:   sweets, jams, sugar sweetened  drinks and even cappuccino. bbq sauce, cereal, crackers, bread.

It may be a difficult habit to break at first, but do you want to live longer or live longer?

Not doing this could lead to colon cancer - from Health Cracker

Live healthy and long

Repost from Health Cracker   | August 16, 2013

Not doing this could increase risk for health cancer.  What? Oral hygiene (you thought washing....)

There has been large quantity of fusobacteria found in colon cancer patients.  Thus fusobacteria in mouth should be removed by having oral hygiene like 2x brushing and flossing. Or chew gum containing xylitol.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.   Avoid fatty and sweet foods. Avoid eating eating sticky sugar candies.  The longer sugar stays in mouth or teeth, the more damage it can do to the oral cavity.
