Fasting during the Holy Week

Live healthy and long

Rizal Philippines
3.31.2021

We can practice fasting beginning today until  Saturday.  Fasting can be done for health and religious reasons.

1.  Religious -  desayuno -  a form of penitence, sacrifice to remember the suffering of the Lord before and during the crucifixion.

2.  Health  -  fasting will rest your digestive and endocrine system for sometime

Fasting need not mean prolonged hunger and starvation.   It can mean, as the Muslimd do during the Ramadan do this from sun up to sun down.  Avoid taking in solid foods.  You can just take liquid food:   water, juice or milk.   Only for twelve hours

Prevention of Parkinson disease: removal of sugar and taking probiotic

Live healthy and long

Rizal Philippines

Those of you closely following Health e-Tips already know your gut is at the center of the health.

In previous issues, we've discussed how improving gut health can:

  • Melt pounds right off your body—effortlessly
  • Brighten your mood
  • Clear out your arteries
  • Fight everything from a cold to cancer
  • And more.
And now there's a new finding that hits particularly close to home...

See, I've been fighting Parkinson's disease for over a decade.

I've been able to keep it under control thanks to the Paleo diet, exercise, and key supplements.

But of course, if you can avoid the disease, that's your best bet.

And new research suggests at least in some cases, Parkinson's is entirely PREVENTABLE.

In fact, it'll it only takes a few simple steps to possibly STOP Parkinson's from ever taking hold.

Folks, if I can help even a SINGLE PERSON avoid getting this disease, all this is worth it!!

And the way to do it has everything to do with your gut health...

Breakthrough study could help prevent 10% of PD cases

According to specialists, 10 percent of folks can prevent the autoimmune disease from cropping up in the first place.

Here's what I mean...

About 10 percent of PD cases are actually caused by gene mutations in the genes coding for proteins such as PINK1 and Parkin.

Folks with these mutations end up developing Parkinson's at a much younger age.

However, in mouse models, these same mutations have never generated disease symptoms—leading many researchers to conclude that mice can't be used in the study of PD.

Now, that's all changed...

Because in the new study, scientists realized a KEY DIFFERENCE between the mice used for studies verses how humans live in the real world.

See, lab mice live in a germ-free environment.

Compare to the guts of humans, which interact with a multitude of infectious microorganisms like bacteria.

So for the first time, the researchers did a test:

They used bacteria that cause mild intestinal symptoms to infect the lab mice who model the human population with the PD-causing mutation.

Sure enough, it triggered PD-like symptoms in these animals later in life.

For this 10 percent, preventing inflammation in the gut EARLIER in life means preventing Parkinson's LATER in life!

And preventing inflammation is DEFINITELY something I show you how to do...

Eliminating Parkinson's before it starts

The best place to start is by removing as much sugar from your diet as possible.

See, in your gut, there are essentially two types of bacteria: "good" and "bad."

And when you ingest sugar or foods like bread, pasta, and rice, these carbohydrates feed the bad bacteria in your gut.

This allows them to take over and KICK OUT the GOOD bacteria.

When this happens, it's called dysbiosis—and it's the root of many diseases.

Remove the sugar, and you remove the bad bacteria's food sourceit starts dying off
But having them die off isn't enough...

You have to help the good bacteria proliferate and RECLAIM the space the other bacteria emptied out from.

You can do that in two ways:

  1. By eating plenty of fiber; and
  2. By taking a high quality probiotic.
Fiber is the preferred food of good bacteria. You'll help ensure it continues to win the fight against bad bacteria and keep it... and inflammation... at bay.

Plus, when you take a probiotic with multiple strains and a CFU in the BILLIONS, you'll kick start the process of replacing the bad bacteria with good.

Note that eating fermented foods will give you an even a higher amount of probiotic and strains. Examples include sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt.

To Your Health,

Dr. Glenn S. Rothfeld, M.D.

Why observing fasting during the Lenten season is good for your health

Live healthy and long

Rizal Philippines
April 1, 2017

I usually avoid making a post on April 1, because the readers may misconstrue this as a joke (April Fools joke)

However, I came across a Q and A at the channel of a preacher who was asked about fasting and the Lenten season.

There is a medicinal and health value for fasting. The preacher said he lost weight through fasting.  He was bloated because of the steroid he took for asthma.  He fasted eating only fruit and vegetable juice.

There is health value in fasting. It enables your liver and pancreas to rest, and your body to eliminate toxin.  And helps you lose weight.

Several posts have been made by this blog about fasting.

Top 3 Supplements you need most

Top 3 Supplements You Need the Most

What are the top 3 supplements that your body needs most?  They are calcium, Vitamin D, and Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil.

Here is the latest post from Newsmax Health on the said article.   (Dr. Mercola harps on this very often.  Omega 3 is his favorite)

 1.         Vitamin D “is the most common nutrient deficiency in America today,” says Steven Masley, M.D., author of The 30-Day Heart Tune-up. Vitamin D is created in our body when sunshine hits our skin. However, most of us spend our days indoors. “We spend far less time outdoors than our ancestors did,” says Dr. Masley. “Every cell in your body needs vitamin D to function at its best.” Deficiencies are responsible for high blood pressure, increased risk of heart attacks, and strokes, says the Tampa-based physician.

Low vitamin D is also associated with loss of bone density, increased risk of cancer, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. In England, there was a recent surge in rickets, a childhood bone disease caused by lack of vitamin D. “Since it is difficult to get enough of this vitamin from food,” says Dr. Masley, “you need to get plenty of sunshine, but without letting yourself get burned.”

Bottom line:
Take a vitamin D supplement with 2,000 IUs daily.

2.         Calcium. Although Americans eat a lot of calcium-rich foods, including dairy products, we tend to be deficient because our modern diets are too acidic, which reduces the amount of the mineral in our bodies, says nutritionist J.J. Virgin, author of The Virgin Diet Cookbook. She says that beyond protecting bone health, calcium has a calming effect on the nervous system. It’s found in dairy foods, green vegetables and salmon.

Bottom line: Take a 500-mg calcium supplement daily.

3.         Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation that leads to heart disease and cancer. There are three types: EPA and DHA, which you find in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, and ALA which you get in vegetable oils and walnuts. “Ideally you should be eating three to four servings of wild, cold-water seafood each week,” says Virgin.

Bottom line: Take 2 grams of a high-quality fish oil supplement daily.

Why do American die earlier and have poorer health?

Live healthy and long

From Dr. Mercola archives | January 2013

Despite spending twice  $8,600, the amount of average GDP on health care (because of bloated medical charge and expenses by US hospitals and pharma) US comes last in health and longevity among 17 affluent nations of the world.  This is contained in an analysis:    US Health in International Perspective: Shorter Lives,  Poorer Health

Public health is affected by 1.  nutrition,  2.  exercise and 3. exposure to toxins and yet these 3 areas are largely ignored in the US.

Nutrition:   US consumes GMO products, transfat oil, and HFCS in many foodstuffs.  Thus there is diabetes and heart diseases, cancer and inflammation

Toxins:    in air,   house care products, in water, in cosmetics, plastics, and in medicines.  Many synthetic drugs, are taken. Americans take the most number of pills per capita;  drugs have at least 70 SE each.  Water is polluted.

Exercise:   30% of Americans lead a sedentary life and therefore have lifestyle diseases

Some of Mercolas guideline for healthy living:

l.  Replace juices and sodas with pure water;  (Nikken or Kangen water?)

2.  Eat a healthy diet, avoid processed and junk foods

3,  Avoid GMO food

4.  Avoid exposure to toxins,

5.  Exercise regularly

6.  Expose yourself to the sun but not too much in the Phl, you may have heat stroke

Health benefits of eating chocolate

Live healthy and long

Repost from Newsmaxhealth | Feb 2013

For those who still feel guilty about eating chocolates, and although chocolate is associated with Valentine, eating chocolate, especially the dark ones has very clear health benefits:  (mainly because of anti oxidants that it contain)

Cardiovascular diseases.  Various studies have shown the beneficial effect of chocolate vs CVD:
-in Germany, an 8 year study involving 20,000 subject showed that eating 2 oz of chocolate per day, decreased risk of stroke and heart attacks by 39%.  Wow.

-in Australia, those women aged over 70% who ate chocolates were 60% less likely to die from heart attacks.

Chocolates were thought to have blood thinning properties.

Dementia.  American Heart Association journal  Hypertension said that drinking cocoa flavored flavonol  for 8 weeks showed improvement in memory.

Obesity. It is said to be a lazy man's exercise.  Eating chocolate, while it increases caloric intake caused decrease in weight

Diabetes.  Flavinoids in cocoa decreases insulin resistance enabling the body to metabolize glucose effectively thus decreasing demand for insulin

Depression.  Chocolate contains PEA (phenethylamine) the same compound when your brain releases when you fall in love.   triggering release of endorphins, the feel good hormone.  It also contains anadamine which stimulates the receptors in brain as marijuana.

Early death.   Those who ate chocolate lived longer for a year than those who did not.

Chocolate is also good for cough and migraine.

Chocolate anyone?
