FDA denies petition of Corn Refiners Association on HFCS

Effective Cures that are Cheap for Everyone

FDA slammed the door on Corn Refiner's Association petition to rename High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) as corn sugar, allegedly to avoid confusion

FDA says no to request for HFCS rebranding

But sugar is sugar and a syrup is a syrup.

We see a rise in number of people with Type 2 diabetes and what could be the cause?

HFCS has been getting bad press lately as cause of diabetes and other illness It causes obesity, because it causes spike of insulin, which blocks the action of glucagon which dissolves fat. (I feel bad when I take 3 in l coffee, which I found out uses HFCS)   I now know the culprit behind the unexplained spike of my blood sugar although I watch my diet carefully?

Isn't the HFCS called the chemical sugar.?

Dear Reader,

I love growing my own vegetables. I'm like a kid in a candy store when my garden starts to sprout. For me there are few sights more welcome than vines heavy with little red cherry tomatoes and the tops of carrots and parsnips standing tall out of the soil.

It turns out, though, that a villain could be lurking in the garden. A villain that could easily be mistaken for those carrots or parsnips. Or anise or parsley.

One that, if eaten, can, in a matter of just a few minutes, send you straight to the emergency room...or worse.

Hemlock is the very thing that did Socrates in after he was convicted of corrupting youth in ancient Athens. And it could do you in too if you're not careful.

Poison hemlock is a fern-like plant that could easily be mistaken for several garden-variety plants. In fact, it was by a 35-year old man just this year.

The gardner wasn't sure what it was, but he figured it was okay since it was in his garden. It just didn't occur to him that something toxic could be growing among those veggies and fruits.

So he prepared it with some other vegetables and ate it. Ten minutes later, he felt tremors through his entire body. His muscles seemed delayed, and his eyes weren't tracking. He ended up in the emergency room for four hours.

This is only one of five cases of hemlock poisoning this year. Other people have mistaken it for exotic lettuces because it showed up among some lettuce starts. How could such a thing happen? It's easy--hemlock seeds can sometimes end up in soil mixtures used at nurseries for plant starts. Water, birds, and rodents can also spread the seeds.

Poison hemlock can grow in almost any climate, so it's critical that you know how to identify it. It's actually a member of the carrot family. It grows 4 to 6 feet tall and has white flowers and fern-like leaves. All parts of the plant are dangerous.

Early symptoms of hemlock poisoning include confusion, muscle paralysis, and a burning sensation in the mouth. The poisoning soon leads to respiratory failure and death.

If you find poison hemlock in your garden, put on gloves and pull it up. Put it in a bag and seal it up before disposing of it.

This fact sheet offers information about poison hemlock, including photos.

Yours in good health,

Christine O'Brien

The necessity of niacin

Q: I've heard that niacin is related to the development of dementia. How, and what should I be doing?

Dr. Wright: It's been known for more than 70 years that a severe deficiency of niacin, a form of vitamin B3, can lead to dementia in a relatively short period of time. But now we know that for some people, even a slight deficiency over a much longer time period could have the same devastating effects.

Of course, it won't happen to most of us, since nutrient requirements can vary from person to person a thousandfold or more, depending both on the specific nutrient and on your individual genetics. But for those of us genetically programmed to need more niacin, it's a real hazard. Until genetic testing can tell us specifically who's at risk, we all need to pay attention.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) in Atlanta conducted a study to determine if small degrees of niacin insufficiency could contribute to Alzheimer's disease. They checked the dietary intake of niacin in 3,718 individuals over a nine-year period and gave them cognitive tests every three years.

The researchers found that lower niacin intake from foods was, in fact, associated with developing Alzheimer's disease. Conversely, they found that higher food intake of niacin could help prevent dementia. In the study, higher levels of niacin were also associated with a slower annual rate of age-related, non-Alzheimer's cognitive decline.

Higher doses of niacin can also help reverse certain types of dementia. For example, Abram Hoffer, M.D., has demonstrated for more than 40 years that high doses of niacinamide (another form of vitamin B3) can actually reverse many cases of schizophrenia if started soon enough after diagnosis.

Niacin and other B-vitamins are found in abundance in whole, unprocessed, unrefined foods. Although the list is actually quite long, the best sources of niacin are brewer's yeast, unroasted nuts and seeds, and whole grains. And it certainly can't hurt to take a vitamin containing niacin, too.

Subject: Dermatologists HATE Me for Saying This...

Discovery Health Publishing

Dear ,
It's summer, and that means it's time to fire up the grill and enjoy the outdoors with your family and friends.
It also means you'll hear the propaganda machine being cranked up by the dermatologists and sunscreen industry telling you to apply layer upon layer of commercial sunscreens before you leave the house.
But before you slather on your "protection," there's something you need to know.
Your sunscreen could be doing you more harm than good. In fact, your sunscreen could be boosting your chances of getting skin cancer!
Here's what you need to know to protect yourself from the sunscreen rip-off.
Shocker #1: Sunscreens contain dangerous chemicals
Sunscreens are supposed to protect you from harm. But sunscreens are loaded with chemicals that can make you sick. Here's a list of some of the worst offenders:
  • Parabens. These toxins are used as preservatives in many cosmetic products - including sunscreens. But they do a lot more than prevent spoilage. Parabens act like the female hormone, estrogen, in your body. They also undermine the effect of testosterone.1 In other words, parabens disrupt normal hormone activity in your body.
  • BHA. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) says you should use sun protection if you apply BHA to your skin.2 So why would anyone with a brain put it in a sunscreen product? But it gets worse. The FDA says you should never use BHA on infants or children. Ever.
  • Oxybenzone. Here's a great idea for a sunscreen ingredient. Studies show that exposure to the sun's rays cause oxybenzone to increase production of skin-damaging free radicals!3
  • Hydroquinone. You want cancer with that? Hydroquinone is known to cause cancer in laboratory animals.4 So why do they put it in your sunscreen?
Shocker #2: Better Options Exist... But You're Not Allowed to Have Them
If you want better sunscreen protection, move to Europe.
Europe? Yes... because European sunscreens can offer better protection than those allowed in the US.
In fact, when the non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) tested 446 SPF 30+ sunscreens available in the US, they found 284 of them were too weak to meet European standards.5
That's because the US products protect against UVB rays... but not the less obvious UVA rays.
UVB rays cause sunburn. But UVA rays cause damage without burning. And sunscreens in Europe can contain several proven, non-toxic UVA blockers that aren't allowed in the US.
So your skin gets quietly toasted without you ever noticing. In fact, one of the non-toxic ingredients allowed in Europe is more than 5 times more effective than the best ingredient allowed in the US.
But not to worry. AT least your sunscreen protects you from skin cancer, right?
Wrong!
Shocker #3: Your Sunscreen May Be a Ticking Time Bomb of Cancer
The main reason everyone tells you to use sunscreen is to protect your skin from cancer. But there's very little evidence that sunscreens offer any cancer protection at all.
In fact, as you'll see in a moment, the exact opposite may be true!
In Australia - where you can really see the effects of the sun - researchers tested sunscreen on 1,621 people. They found that sunscreen use provided no real protection at all against the most common form of skin cancer.6
And when it comes to melanoma - the nastiest form of skin cancer - a report from the University of British Columbia says sunscreens offer no benefit, either.7
However, an ingredient found in 4 out of 10 sunscreens was found to increase the risk of skin cancer.8 And a European study group saw a rise in nasty melanomas among children who used sunscreens more often.9
And cancer isn't the only problem linked with sunscreen use...
Shocker #4: Sunscreen Use Robs You of Critical Nutrition
Remember when rickets ravaged the civilized world?
If you do, you're a lot older than you look. Because rickets was wiped out generations ago. Or so we thought.
But rickets is making a comeback. And it's thanks - in part - to sunscreen use.
Rickets is a childhood disease caused by too little vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, bones can't develop, and children wind up with soft, spongy, weak bones.
Long ago, rickets nearly disappeared completely. We added vitamin D to foods like milk, and the problem was solved.
Until parents began slathering sunscreen on their children. Now rickets is making a comeback - especially in sun-starved Britain. Take the case of poor Lisa, for example.
London's Daily Mail reports that Lisa lives in one of Britain's sunniest locations - the Isle of Wight. And her mother's a nurse.
But at age 12, Lisa began experiencing pain and weakness in her legs. Then, after a hip operation, she failed to recover as expected.
It took a while, but her doctors figured it out. Lisa was suffering from a serious vitamin D deficiency. And the major problem was that her mother covered her liberally with sunscreen every time she went out to play.10
But it's not just kids who suffer.
Melt Away 350 Diseases Doing
Nothing More than Touching Your Ear !
If you suffer from chronic health problems ... pain ... addiction to alcohol or drugs ... excess weight ... low sex drive ... or virtually any disease ... this may be the most exciting message you'll ever read.
You may have tried just about everything to heal your health problems, but when nothing helped, you feel there isn't anything else you can do. However, there is...
... a little-known treatment based on
an ancient technique that can quickly help even
long-standing health problems. . . in people of all ages.
The simple solution you'll discover here is not on the radar of most doctors and other practitioners in the healthcare industry. The method is so easy, you'll wonder how it could possibly work.
In a case of ultimate irony, vitamin D may be one of your body's best weapons against cancer. And you may need 4,000 International Units (IU) per day to get any real benefit.11
But the government calls for only 800 IU per day for mature adults - a number determined only on the basis of bone health.
And since the sun is your major source of vitamin D for most of the year, using sunscreen is actually be robing you of vitamin D. And that's the very nutrient you need to prevent cancer - the problem sunscreen is supposed to prevent.
And that's just one of vitamin D's many health benefits.
But that may not be the worst news of all. Because your health's greatest enemy may be the one who's supposed to be protecting you.
Shocker #5: The FDA Is No Help
It's old hat to say the FDA is in the drug industry's pocket. But time after time, you can't come to any other reasonable conclusion.
Today, I listed 4 dangerous chemicals in sunscreen products. The FDA allows them all - in spite of their risks.
And in spite of ample proof they're safe, the FDA prevents the use of non-toxic ingredients that could protect you from UVA rays.
It's almost as if the FDA was simply doing whatever the cosmetics industry wants.
And that's pretty much what you have to conclude when you consider their latest sunscreen move.
Under pressure from two industry groups - the Personal Care Products Council and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association - the FDA just delayed new sunscreen rules.
The FDA called for more honest reporting of sunscreen benefits. And they set a June 2012 deadline. But the industry claims it would be a burden to honestly state the protection offered by their products. They need more time.
So the FDA buckled, and gave the industry another 6 months to comply... and another year for smaller companies.
Forget the consumer, who's looking out for their health. What's your well being compared to corporate profits?
Protect Yourself from the Sun WITHOUT the Toxic Goop
Well, you can fool them all. Look for sunscreens made with zinc or titanium oxide. These ingredients provide a physical block to the sun's rays... and do it without endangering your health.
Even better, zinc and titanium don't have to be applied ahead of time. So you can get the sun you need to make enough vitamin D... and then apply your natural sunscreen for instant protection.
Most light-skinned people only need about 15 - 20 minutes of summer sun a day to make enough vitamin D. If your skin is darker, you may need up to an hour or so.
Wishing you strength and vitality,
Jason Kennedy

2x spearmint for 5 days results in hair growth suppression

I am more interested in the fact that drinking spearmint tea twice a day for five days  before ovulation resulted in decrease of testosterone and increase in estradiol and thus caused decrease in growth of unwanted hair.

Thus less use for shaving and hair removal drugs, and methods. (including laser.)

Dear Reader,

It sure doesn't look like summer is on its way. All I see from my window is grey above and raised umbrellas below.

But there are plenty of other clues that the warmer months are ahead. One big one: The mainstream has started its yearly beating of the SPF drum.

The beat is a little out of rhythm, though. The industry has failed to meet an FDA labeling requirement to make levels of sunscreen protection more clear. Specifically, the FDA wanted changes clarifying which brands protect against UVB and which protect against UVA rays (the scary ones). Current SPF numbers are mostly related to UVB rays, because those are the ones that lead to sunburn.

Manufacturers are also supposed to stop claiming their products are waterproof or sweatproof--they have to say they're "resistant" now.

The requirement was introduced last year. Sunscreen makers were given until next month to get those new labels on the shelf.

Of course, they're having a "hard time" meeting the deadline (shocking, I know). So now they're being given until December. This leaves SPF-seeking consumers scratching their heads for another year.

Here's a little secret, though: None of this really matters. In fact, no matter what the labels say, you can walk right on by that sunscreen display without giving the bottles so much as a glance.

Yes, sun exposure can contribute to skin cancer. But there are major benefits of the sun that you can't get slathering yourself in a layer of potentially dangerous chemicals. You can actually reduce your skin cancer risk with limited sun exposure, an excellent diet, and specific supplements (plenty of folate and vitamin A). The summer is prime time to soak up the rays that will help your body make vitamin D.

Sunscreens are dangerous for many reasons. They encourage people to stay outside longer under the assumption they're protected. Which of course leads to more damage. UVA rays aren't always blocked. These cause deeper damage while the sunscreen works against UVB damage. So you keep the redness (an important warning of too much exposure) away while the UVA rays are wreaking havoc deeper in your body.

Plus, they're chock full of potentially toxic chemicals, including some compounds that, when coupled with sun exposure, actually do MORE damage to the skin and others that cause cancer to spread, as Dr. Wright outlines in the April 2012 issue of Nutrition & Healing. If you're a subscriber, I highly recommend you hold on to that article. It's an essential guide to the benefits of the sun and the reasons for avoiding sunscreens.

And of course, sunscreens keep you from the biggest benefit of the sun: vitamin D. Several studies have shown that strict use of sunscreen may induce vitamin D deficiency.

So, if we're taking sunscreen out of the picture, how do you get the benefits of the sun without the potential damage? The old-fashioned way! Shade and protective clothing.

Dr. Wright recommends getting enough sun exposure on your bare (sunscreen-free) face and arms to turn your skin just slightly pink. At that point, head back into the shade.

Enjoy your fun in the sun this summer. Just stay sensible and you can protect yourself from sun damage and get the true benefits of the sun.

Yours in good health,

Christine O'Brien

Sip the hair away

Q: I have excess facial hair. I find myself wanting to hide my face whenever I leave the house. I can't stand the pain of waxing, and those creams just smell horrible. What can I do?

Dr. Wright: Sip a cup of strong spearmint tea to decrease the excess testosterone production that can lead to excess body hair.

Researchers in Turkey asked 21 women with excess facial and body hair to drink one cup of strong spearmint tea twice daily for five days in the pre-ovulatory phases of their menstrual cycles. Total testosterone wasn't reduced, but there was a significant reduction in free testosterone and a significant increase in estradiol--this can put the brakes on the stimulation of unwanted hair growth.

Enjoy a cup on a regular basis, but don't overdo it--higher testosterone does, after all, stimulate a healthy libido.
