Vaccines to fight Ebola
I was able to watch last night the Discovery feature on Ebola. How it spread early on and how the vaccine was discovered and produced are interesting stories.
1. Early on Ebola was spread in a health care mission because they reused needles that were not sterilized. They did not realize also that burying the dead hastened the spread through contact with body fluids and feces.
2. Dr. Charles Amzhael discovered the vaccine in treating Ebola. 15 years ago.

Noticeable laxity in complying with #Ebola quarantine protocols for returning Liberia OFWs
Live healthy and long
Rizal Philippines | December 4, 2014
I noticed a laxity in the enforcement of the quarantine protocols for returning OFW from Liberia. Liberia experienced the most death in West Africa.
The members of the family members were free to roam with the returnees, no protective gear were used and many were requesting that the 21 days period be reduced.
Why 21 days? Because that's the maximum gestation period of Ebola. Either you have or you dont have it at the end of the 21 days. So dear family friends, you can only know if your loved ones will not kill you nor destroy your entire neighborhood after 21 days. MInd you too that his semen can still carry Ebola and infect the partners with 82 days. (So mga Ms. watch out.)
It we want to stay an Ebola free country, we have to be strict and practice no non sense discipline. Small laxity can mean death. It happened in USA. It can happen to us...

Ebola dead being buried. Note absence of protective gear by the workers, thus helping further its spread.
It was only 5,000 sometime last month. (see post last 11/18 Ebola deaths exceed 5,000)
The number of deaths has really jumped. It is a sad day for disease control and epidemiology. And for the people of Africa that is saddled with hunger, civil strive, famine and more.
It is a leap of 1,200 from previous report of WHO released Wednesday. Nearly 16,000 have dangerously infected.
What can be done further?
Many countries have donated like USA. Cuba, US, UK has sent medical volunteers. What about the rest of the world?

Diabetes - a growing health concern in the Philippines and in the world
Live healthy and long
A news item came in the PDI regarding diabetes as growing health concern in the Philippines and the world. One in 25 Filipinos has diabetes and is now the 8th cause of death in the country. (From 3.4% to $.8%
Today I visited my daughter who requested for hospitalizat-on because she felt bad. Her blood sugar is high (due to work at night and constant sitting at the office, lack of exercise, and smoking - caused by poor lifestyle)
About 400 million are affected by diabetes worldwide and the number is expected to reach 600 million by 2035
Some facts about diabetes
1. Diabetes is predicted to be the 7th cause of death worldwide by 2030
2. There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1 - lack of production of insulin by the body
Type 2 - results from the body's ineffective use of insulin,
3. There is 3rd type of diabetes - gestational diabetes experienced by pregnant women resulting in hyperglycemia (the symptoms, or the diabetes disappear after pregnancy?)

Deaths from #Ebola exceeds 5,000
Live healthy and long
From Newsweek
The number of deaths from Ebola has passed the 5,000 mark. There are 14,098 reported cases with 5,160 reported deaths rising from just 4,960 last Friday. (It was just 2 last March. Who did not consider Ebola a major crisis only in July. By that time, the Ebola has spread far and wide and deaths began to multiply)
WHO was criticized for being slow. Nations have not lived to their pledges to help control Ebola. US pledged $500 million, and so with IMF.
The greater problem will be economic and social. Losses from unworked hours, cost of death and dislocation, taking care of orphans is a much bigger problem.
NIgeria though took a hard stance vs the epidemic by closing its borders to travel to and from infected countries. In USA, the issue of quarantine involved human rights and civil liberties issues. So far, two have died from Ebola in USA.
What can we do to control / to prevent Ebola from infecting our countries communities?

Could Ebola be airborne? Yes USMARIID reports in 1990
Live healthy and long
There are allegations that Ebola could not be airborne
But USAMRIID (US Army Medical Research Institute of Infection Disease reports this to be airborne as early as 1990 (I guess this is the basis of the movie "Outbreak."
The narration beginning on page 273 narrates an airborne Ebola, unlike what the current USA administration is suggestion. This is contained in the book Hot Zone by Richard Preston...
From Scientific American - Ebola could be airborne
"
The Ebola Reston virus jumped quickly from room to room, and as it blossomed in the monkeys, it seemed to mutate spontaneously into something that looked quite a lot like influenza. But it was an Ebola flu.
The monkeys died with great quantities of clear mucus and green mucus running from their noses, mixed with blood that would not clot. Their lungs were destroyed, rotten and swimming with Ebola virus. They had pneumonia. When a single animal with a nosebleed showed up in a room, generally 80 percent of the animals died in that room shortly afterward. The virus was extraordinarily contagious in monkeys.
The clinical symptoms of the disease served as a reminder of the fact that Ebola is related to certain kinds of flu-like illnesses seen in human children. It seems that the virus could adapt quickly to new hosts, and that it could change its character spontaneously and rapidly as it entered a new population.
Ebola apparently drifted through the building's air-handling ducts. By January 24, it had entered Room B, and monkeys in that room started going into shock and dying with runny noses, red eyes, and masklike expressions on their faces. In the following weeks, the infection entered rooms I, F, E, and D, and the animals in these rooms virtually all died.
When it became apparently to the Army researchers that three of the four men who became infected had not cut themselves, just about everyone at USAMRIID concluded that Ebola can spread through the air.

"Ebola... jumped quickly from room to room... a lot like influenza"
What happened in that building was a kind of experiment. Now they would see what Ebola could do naturally in a population of monkeys living in a confined space, in a kind of city, as it were. The Ebola Reston virus jumped quickly from room to room, and as it blossomed in the monkeys, it seemed to mutate spontaneously into something that looked quite a lot like influenza. But it was an Ebola flu.

"...could look like the flu... a different strain could appear in a month's time... drifted through the air-handling ducts"
The Institute scientists suspected that they were seeing a mutant strain of Ebola, something new and a little different from what they had seen just a month before, in December, when the Army had nuked the monkey house. It was frightening -- it was as if Ebola could change its character fast -- and could look like the flu. As if a different strain could appear in a month's time. The clinical symptoms of the disease served as a reminder of the fact that Ebola is related to certain kinds of flu-like illnesses seen in human children. It seems that the virus could adapt quickly to new hosts, and that it could change its character spontaneously and rapidly as it entered a new population.

"USAMRIID concluded that Ebola can spread through the air"
John Coleus certainly caught the virus when he cut himself with a bloody scalpel, no question about that. What is more worrisome is that the others did NOT cut themselves, yet the virus still entered their bloodstreams. It got there somehow. Most likely it entered their blood through contact with the lungs. It infected them through the air. When it became apparently to the Army researchers that three of the four men who became infected had not cut themselves, just about everyone at USAMRIID concluded that Ebola can spread through the air.

So far there are 10,000 reported cases of Ebola in West Africa. So far 4,500 have died. This is the number since March of 2014.
Compare that to the number of dengue cases in the Philippines - there were 42, 207 cases from January 193 being fatal.
Worldwide:
The incidence of dengue has grown dramatically around the world in recent decades. Over 2.5 billion people – over 40% of the world's population – are now at risk from dengue. WHO currently estimates there may be 50–100 million dengue infections worldwide every year.
We should be more worried about dengue, and other mosquito borne diseases. About a million die annually from mosquito bites making it the deadliest animal on earth
About 390 million are infected by mosquitoes, with 500,000 of them developing into dengue; 25,000 deaths result form dengue

Cases across the Americas, South-east Asia and Western Pacific have exceeded 1.2 million cases in 2008 and over 2.3 million in 2010 (based on official data submitted by Member States). Recently the number of reported cases has continued to increase. In 2013, 2.35 million cases of dengue were reported in the Americas alone, of which 37 687 cases were severe dengue.
Not only is the number of cases increasing as the disease spreads to new areas, but explosive outbreaks are occurring. The threat of a possible outbreak of dengue fever now exists in Europe and local transmission of dengue was reported for the first time in France and Croatia in 2010 and imported cases were detected in three other European countries. In 2012, an outbreak of dengue on Madeira islands of Portugal resulted in over 2000 cases and imported cases were detected in 10 other countries in Europe apart from mainland Portugal.
(Dengue and Ebola are both level 4 diseases: fatal usually and no known cures. Only strong body resistance can halt its morbidity; both are hemorrhagic)We should be more worried about dengue, and other mosquito borne diseases. Nigeria is one of the most populous countries in Africa. It has some 21 million population and it equivalent to the population of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia combined.
It has also controlled the Nigeria worm disease; and it has 650,000 reported cases.
Nigeria was able to do this by:
1. Banning travel from Ebola infected areas;
2. Close monitoring of suspected Ebola cases;
3. Strong public health system,
4. Strict observance of protocol.
What happened? An LDC surpassing US in control of outbreak?

There was a marked sell off at New York Stock Exchange on fears of Ebola outbreak...Those who suffered were airline and hotel stocks
Two nurses contacted Ebola after caring for Thomas Duncan, a Liberian national who was confined in Texas hospital. One of the nurses, travelled to Ohio, was in close contact with several other persons plus airline passengers (100+)
It was bad enough that Duncan was misdiagnosed, and the nurse who cared for Duncan allowed to travel in a commercial airline from Texas to Ohio. It should not happen to USA. Thus the head of CDC, Tom Frieden was put on the spot. For this lapse.
Even Pres Obama had to cancel his campaign trip to attend to this crisis.
How could lapses here affect the trading at NYSE?

Ebola death surpasses 2,000
Live healthy and long
From KFF Organization through Reuters September 8, 2014
Deaths from Ebola has surpassed the 2,000 mark and the number of cases at 4,000. The number of deaths was only 1.200 two weeks ago.
We should prepare and be aware. Death rate from Ebola is 50%. IT HAS NO KNOWN CURE!!!
Health experts expect that the number of cases could rise exponentially in the coming weeks. No sign of abatement or containment is visible...
This is attributed to lack of sturdy public health facilities in these West African nations
Many are also amidst terrorists attack and civil unrest.

Many other household uses for cola drink
Live healthy and long
Repost from Daily Health
A recent comment on the Mercola post at FB on what happens when you drink cola drinks says that certainly a popular drink can not be classified as as food. It has other uses in the house as a household cleaner.

#Citronella oil vs dengue - 1st case of dengue reported in Japan after 60 years
Live healthy and long
Rizal Philippines | August 30, 2014
For the first time ever, Japan reported case of dengue. (From Washington post - 1st case of dengue in Japan after 40 years ) Worldwide the estimate for dengue infection is between 50 to 100 million. WHOs estimate is at 390 million. That is a large number. Many nations are clueless on how to eradicate combat dengue.
I had my yard planted to Citronella and I think it is useful in controlling mosquitoes and other household pests
Here is an article from Cymbopogon genus plant (it is related to the lemon grass) The Mercola article does not seem to distinguish between the Lemon grass and the citronell grassa because both seem to be used for flavoring and aromatherapy
Citronella oil + vanillin provides 3 hours of protection vs mosquitoes, comparable to the protection provided by chemical mosquito repellent DEET.
