Suicide rates in USA is on the rise, partly attributable to the current economic crisis. Suicide rates for men aged 25- 64 has risen to up to 18 per 100,000. This is compared to 22 per l00,000 during the Depression era. The suicide rate to men in their 50s has risen to 30 per l00,000 (a 50% increase)
Part of the problem may be due to over use of anti depressants: like Prozac, Zoloft, (known as SSRI) that JAMA issue in January 2010 found to have little or no effect on depression (33% effective just like placebo) but with bizarre side effect including suicidal thoughts. (When my sister in USA who is in USA and a friend psychiatrist put me under Zoloft medication I had bizarre images when I slept)
Exercise may do better than SSRI.
The trouble may be due also to deficiency of the Bible of Psychiatry: the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Model of Mental Health) lack of validity in its description of mental disorder. This is according to NIMH which no longer looks at DSM as the gold standard.
