Local soup kitchen could be the key to cutting hypertension

One of the best lessons my mother ever taught me is that money can't buy happiness. And if you know a loved one who has tried every trick in the book to get his high blood pressure under control, you've seen firsthand that a bunch of bills can't buy better health either.

Most folks with hypertension spend a king's ransom on ACE inhibitors, diuretics, and special diets, only to watch their blood pressure refuse to budge, like a stubborn, ticked-off mule.

If that sounds like no life to you, some brilliant researchers at Carnegie Mellon University say your local soup kitchen may be sitting on a powerful cure that could keep your blood pressure lower than a limbo stick. And here's a hint -- it's not the soup.

After analyzing data on nearly 7,000 volunteers over the age of 50, researchers found that simply volunteering 200 hours a year can slash your risk of developing hypertension by an unbelievable 40%!

The study, just published in Psychology and Aging, found that people were able to stop hypertension in its tracks regardless of age, race, gender, or any other factor. Logging some hours at a local soup kitchen, food pantry, or animal shelter benefited everyone's blood pressure -- and it improved their psychological well-being, too.

That doesn't surprise me one bit. Volunteering is an excellent way to work off stress, it releases beneficial hormones, and it makes you feel great about yourself. And let's face it -- we all know someone who needs to get off the couch and enjoy a physical and psychological boost.

When I was a young boy, we had three television channels -- when the reception was good. On a cloudy day, we might not have any. Now, at my last count, I have more than 500 channels with everything from gardening tips to horror flicks, and it's too easy to lounge in front of the boob tube for hours at a time, watching your entire day disappear.

I promise that your couch and television are shaving years off your life one mindless minute at a time. They're slowly killing you.

So here's the question -- would you be willing to spend just four hours a week volunteering in order to improve your physical and mental health, and perhaps add years to your life?

Stop by the local soup kitchen, get involved with a local veteran's charity, or call your church and ask if they could use some extra help. And if you're looking for organizations just begging for volunteers, here's a great website that will connect you with local opportunities.

I know it sounds mean, but...
