New Artificial Heart Could Save Thousands of Lives: Top Cardiologist

An artificial heart developed by Carmat, a French firm, could save thousands life according to Dr. Chauncey Crandall,  who heads the heart transplant unit of Palm Beach Cardiovascular unit and author Heart Health Report.

There are 100,000 needing heart transplants a year in US, but only 4,000 are available.  Thus thousands die waiting for a new heart;  some are so disabled with weakened heart.

Carmat has been able to recreate the heart function with microprocessor but the persistent problem has been the blood clot.  The solution has been to line up the area of the heart that comes in contact with the blood with cow tissue.

The artificial heart comes with two  chamber and separated by a membrane. and powered by a battery outside the body;  the other chamber that does not come in contact with blood is lined by polyurethane.

The artificial heart was developed by Alain Carpentier, a co founder and scientific director of Carmat.  Alain successfully pioneered the use of cow tissue in heart valves; and they have been succesfully used for 20 years.
