     Cayenne, a hot pepper native to Central and South America, has been used for decades to treat obesity, diabetes, pain and osteoarthritis, and jalapeƱos are excellent sources of Vitamins C, A and folate.

     All three spices are considered negative calorie foods, meaning they speed up your heart rate and increase your metabolism to such a degree that you are burning more calories than you are consuming.

     A study from the late '80s found that eating a single spicy meal can boost your metabolism by up to 25%, with the spike in calorie burning lasting for up to 3 hours after you finish eating.  More recently, a study from Laval University in Quebec found that men who consumed coffee plus red pepper-packed snacks and meals were able to burn nearly 1,000 more calories a day than a control group!

     By comparison, one hour of aerobic exercise burns only half that number—between 457 to 531 calories.

So How Do These 3 Peppers Work Their Weight Loss Magic?

The secret ingredient is capsaicin—the chemical in peppers that gives them their heat.  The capsaicin in hot peppers has numerous health benefits including...
    Reducing blood cholesterol levels
    Decreasing triglycerides
    Strengthening the immune system
    Destroying the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers

     ...and the research proving capsaicin's potency as a weight loss aid is piling up.

Capsaicin Reduces Appetite

Numerous studies point to capsaicin as an effective appetite suppressant.  A 2009 study published in the journal Clinical Nutrition reported that when combined with green tea, capsaicin reduced the appetite of 27 volunteers, as well as the number of calories they ingested.  Another study found that 12 men and 12 women who consumed .9 grams of capsaicin in tomato juice for 2 consecutive days ate significantly fewer calories than those who drank a placebo mixed with tomato juice:  the women reduced their caloric intake by 14% and the men by 16%.

     Reporting on the findings of a similar study, the European Journal of Nutrition cited one reason why capsaicin so effectively suppresses appetite.  Researchers found that capsaicin decreases the production of the hunger-inducing hormone, ghrelin.

Capsaicin Burns Body Fat and Inhibits the Formation of Fat Tissue

Capsaicin doesn't just raise your heart rate and control your appetite.  This spicy chemical also actively burns fat.  According to a 2010 study published in the Journal of Proteome Research, capsaicin activates the specific proteins that are responsible for burning fat, and suppresses the proteins that are responsible for generating and storing fat.

     A 2007 study conducted by 2 Taiwanese scientists provided proof that capsaicin restricts fat cell formation ... reduces the amount of fat tissue in the body ... and prevents the body from storing unused calories as fat.  Korean researchers, Jong Won Yun and team, also provided evidence that capsaicin stimulates the expression of proteins responsible for suppressing fat storage.  Rats fed high fat diets with capsaicin lost 8% of their body weight compared to rats in the control group that received no capsaicin.

     Hot peppers are an easy and inexpensive weight loss tool to include in your weight management arsenal.  No need to invest in a capsaicin supplement, which may produce side effects such as stomach upset, irritation of ulcers, heartburn, and negative interactions with blood-thinning drugs or aspirin.  You can easily reap the benefits of a curbed appetite and increased metabolism just by sprinkling these spicy peppers into your meals.  Your body will immediately activate its calorie-burning processes and continue burning those calories for many hours thereafter.
