An alarm has been raised over elevated levels of arsenic in rice being sold in USA.
Rice is more likely to contain arsenic because of it being grown in water. There are two types: organic (naturally occurring and passes quickly through the body) and inorganic coming from pesticides.
There are no federal standards for arsenic in rice. Of the 200 samples tested by FDA, the arsenic level was 3.5 to 6.7. Consumer reports showed 8.7. Consumer Union wants the benchmark level to be 5 mcg.
