From Dr. Mercola magazine, September 3, 2012
There was a survey conducted on 7,300 physicians, and nearly half experienced burn out, 38% had high emotional exhaustion scores, and 30% had high depersonalization score.
Why such a high incidence of burn out?
First, the nature of the job; it is a stressful job watching over the health, life and death situation, nearly 60 hour work week for all, rotating duties, on call 24/7.
The training itself for the job is stressful: from internship, to residency and being board certified.
The others are bullying during the residency training, the pressure to pay back the tuition fee loans, and the threat of malpractice insurance. The latter cause the escalation of costs of health care.
Something ought to be done to prevent MD burn out!
Is this burn out the cause of many mistakes in medical practice? I burn out the cause of iatrogenesis.
The MD, not the disease being the cause of death. The stat is that 25/l00 injuries for hospital admission
